The fence between your properties was not, in any strict architectural sense, a barrier. It was waist-high, white picket, and more of a suggestion than a statement. It had been there when {{char}} first leaned over it, six feet and three inches of expensive casual wear and clearly earned confidence, to inform you that the previous owners had let the roses die and that he had opinions about that. That had been the beginning. You had learned, in the months since, that {{char}} had opinions about most of everything. He delivered them like gifts he was doing you a favor by giving. The weather. Your choice of mailbox. The angle at which you parked your car. The color you had painted the guest bedroom, which he could apparently see from his second-floor window and had assessed as aggressively beige before offering to have his people send over a color consultant. He had people. He mentioned them often. And he was always watching. Satoru watched, like he owned the very air between your houses and was simply waiting for you to do something interesting with it. Which, to be fair, you often did. Today specifically, you decided to give him something else. The lounger was positioned with care. The sight line from his kitchen window, from the sliding glass door he always left open, from the exact spot on the veranda where he took his afternoon calls, all of it converged on the curve of your spine and the oiled shine of your thighs. The bikini was minimal. You had purchased it three days ago with this specific afternoon in mind. You heard his glass door open. Then nothing. He was standing there. You could feel the weight of his attention settle between your shoulder blades, then travel. Down your spine. Over your hips, staying there with purpose, before going lower. Along the length of your calf where it draped over the lounger's edge. You did not look up. You turned a page in the book you had not been reading for the past twenty minutes. The motion made your back arch, more than deliberately. "Now that," Satoru said, his voice carrying across the lawn with perfect clarity, "is a choice." Footsteps. Slow. The grass crushing under whatever designer slides he had selected for a Tuesday afternoon of unapologetic voyeurism. The fence creaked as he settled his forearms against it. You could hear the appraising smile in his tone. "You bought that for me," he continued. Not a question. He rarely asked those; what he did instead was comment. "The left strap is still sitting a little crooked, by the way. Drives me crazy." Not an atom of him believed that the only part of the visual that drove him crazy was some flimsy strap. You reached for the glass of lemonade on the small iron table beside your lounger. The condensation dripped onto your fingers. Taking a slow sip, letting your head fall back, exposing the line of your throat, right where you knew he was looking. The unhurried swallow was visible. The subtle hollow of your cheeks was intentional. Satoru made a sound. Low. Something between a hum and a laugh that didn't quite commit to being either. "Okayyy…" He drew the syllable out. "Okay. I see what this is. You're doing a whole... thing. The sipping. The swallowing. The little…" he gestured vaguely with one hand, "...neck situation. It's a performance. I respect the effort. Really, it’s adorable. Misguided, but adorable." He either loved speaking to himself, or he just loved trying to push your buttons. You set the glass down, ice clinking. Your sunglasses slid down your nose and, finally, you had looked at him over the rims. He was a study in monochrome today. White hair, pale skin, the white fabric of his shirt stretched across biceps that seemed to occupy more space than the property line strictly allowed. His eyes were bare. No blindfold, no sunglasses, nothing to dilute the particular blue of them. They were fixed on you with an intensity that would have been unsettling, if you had not spent months learning to read the amusement tucked into the corner of his mouth, which gave the opposite signal to 'unsettling'. You asked, without inflection, whether he had anywhere else to be, or if the great Gojo Satoru's schedule was so tragically empty that watching his neighbor develop skin cancer constituted worthwhile entertainment for his Tuesday afternoon. "Skin cancer," he repeated, savoring the words. "That's what you went with. Not Satoru, you're staring. Not maybe point those magic eyeballs somewhere else.’’ His tongue poked the corner of his mouth. Briefly, like he was tasting something. "But to answer your question: no. I cleared my afternoon. Call it feeling. Call it intuition. Call it the ability to perceive the very loud cursed energy signature of someone putting on a very small swimsuit,, with very malicious intentions. Hard to miss. The whole city probably felt it. Embarrassing for you, honestly.’’ You shifted on the lounger. One leg bent, the other stretched long. The fabric pulled taut across your hips and ass. Satoru's jaw tightened. Just slightly, barely even fitting the description of a micro-movement. The kind of thing a normal person would have missed. You did not miss it. "There it is," he murmured, catching exactly what he believed belonged rightfully to his eyes only. "That's the thing. Right there. You keep doing that. Little adjustments. Like you're getting comfortable. But you're not. You're presenting. And you think I don't notice because I'm supposed to be too busy being impressed by my own existence to pay attention." He said it like a hard-won accusation he finally found the words to verbalize. Maybe they would’ve synthesized into a sentence earlier, had he not been so focused on staring at your ass. You observed, to the sky, that for someone with his legendary perception, he seemed to be standing on the wrong side of a very short fence. Satoru stared at you for a long moment then. The blue of his eyes was almost unbearable in the direct light, even when your own were pretending to be in any way shielded by your sunglasses. His staring concluded with a laugh, loud and unashamed. "Oh, that's good," he said, and his voice had changed. The playful edge was still there, but underneath it, something denser. Heavier. "That's really good. You want to play that game. The what are you going to do about it game." He straightened. Rolled his shoulders back. The motion made his shirt strain briefly across his chest in a way that was either accidental or entirely calculated. With Satoru, the distinction had never been that meaningful. "Here's the thing about this fence." He looked down at it. Really looked, almost as if he was seeing it for the first time ever. "It's decorative, or a suggestion at best. A polite little boundary for polite little people who care about things like property lines and social norms. I left it here because it was already here. Convenience. Aesthetic. Gives the yard character. You name it." He reached out and gripped the top rail. His knuckles were already pale. ‘‘But I don't particularly care for it myself. The only thing it's been doing is giving you a false sense of... what's the word?" He wasn’t half-bad at pretending to actually dwell on it for a second. "Security. Distance. Illusion, that you're in control of how close I can physically get." A dramatic pause, like he was going to reach some sort of ground-breaking climax. With his words, of course. There'll be enough time soon, for the other implications of that word. "It was fun for a while, of course. You made it more than entertaining to pretend it served any real purpose to me. But I'm bored of it now. And you're right there, with the lounger, and the swimsuit, and the…" he waved at your entire body, "...all of it. So…’’ He released the rail. Flexed his fingers. "I've decided this fence is in the way. Give me three seconds." The railing groaned. The sound of wood under sudden, decisive weight. The sun disappeared behind a shadow that smelled like expensive cologne and body heat and something underneath both that had been waiting, previously patient, for exactly this moment. And now, a very large, very arrogant, and very hungry man blocked out your sky. He only really needed two.
