For three weeks, Hesh had existed in the strange and merciless space between life and death.
Sometimes he thought he could hear Maverick talking to him, though he could never make out the words; sometimes there was the faint sound of someone laughing, or the steady rhythm of a machine somewhere beside him, and once, buried so deeply inside the fog that he had wondered afterward whether he had imagined it, he remembered the familiar softness of a plush toy being tucked beneath his arm.
When he finally woke properly, when his eyes opened and the ceiling above him stopped swimming in and out of focus, the first thing he felt was pain and the second was confusion. His throat burned, his body felt as though it had been beaten from the inside out, and every breath seemed to drag against bruises he could not yet see. Yet none of that frightened him as much as the realization that Maverick was not standing beside his bed.
That changed before the day was over.
Hesh remembered the sight of his brother walking through the hospital door with an expression that made something inside his chest ache.
Maverick looked older than Hesh remembered and somehow younger at the same time, as though the years had finally caught up with him while Hesh had been asleep. Hesh had tried to make some joke about how ugly he looked, because that was what he did whenever something became too serious for him to handle, but the words had barely formed before his throat tightened and his eyes filled.
Maverick had understood anyway. He always did.
Hesh had spent so much of their childhood speaking for him, protecting him, standing between him and whatever wanted to hurt him, that there were moments when they hardly needed words at all. He had reached for his brother with a trembling hand, and Maverick had taken it.
For several days afterward, Hesh had been content simply knowing that Maverick was alive and close. He ate when the nurses insisted, slept when his body forced him to, complained about the food with the enthusiasm of a man personally offended by every hospital kitchen in New York, and threatened to escape the moment his legs were strong enough to carry him.
The one thing he never complained about was the plush bull resting beside him. He had recognized it almost immediately. {{user}} had given it to him months ago, back when their relationship had still been something neither of them dared name aloud, and although Hesh would have mocked anyone else for becoming attached to something so soft and ridiculous, he kept that bull close enough that the nurses eventually stopped asking whether they should move it whenever they changed his sheets.
He slept with one hand curled around it. He woke with it tucked against his ribs. Sometimes, when nobody was watching, he would rub his thumb over the little stitched horns and think about {{user}}.
That was why the footage hurt as badly as it did.
The security officer had warned him that he might not want to watch it, but Hesh had never been especially good at listening when someone told him something would hurt. He had watched the recording from the beginning, initially with little more than irritation, expecting to see some stupid argument or misunderstanding that would eventually make sense.
Instead, he watched Maverick standing in his room, his head down, taking what has to be a vet am lashing from {{user}}. He watched {{user}} approach him. He watched the confrontation unfold, and then he saw the hand strike his brother across the face.
Hesh stopped breathing.
His fingers closed around the plush bull so tightly that the soft fabric folded beneath his palm. He didn't notice he was doing it. His eyes remained fixed upon the screen, following every movement with an expression that gradually emptied of everything except disbelief.
Then his mother appeared, and whatever small part of him had still been trying to convince himself that there had to be another explanation simply disappeared.
He knew that woman. He knew what happened when she entered a room.
And then he watched Maverick break.
That was the part Hesh could not forgive himself for witnessing, even though he had not been there. Maverick's face crumpled in a way Hesh had not seen since they were children, and suddenly the hospital room disappeared around him.
He was eighteen again, standing in the doorway of their old home with blood in his mouth and his hands shaking while Maverick stood behind him. He was dragging his brother down a dark street in the middle of the night, telling him not to look back. He was sleeping beneath a bridge because it was safer than going home.
He was twenty years old and exhausted, starving, terrified, and still convinced that if he could just keep Maverick alive long enough, everything would eventually become better.
The footage ended with someone else arriving and pulling Maverick away, coming between Maverick and their mouth and likely telling her off to the point that security came and led her away. He had to ask Maverick about that person when he was out of the hospital and personally thank them for defending him when he couldn't.
Hesh sat there long after the screen had gone black. He said nothing.
He simply held the plush bull against his chest and stared at his own reflection in the dark screen, trying to reconcile the person he had spent months loving with the person he had just watched hurt his brother.
And when {{user}} finally walked through his hospital door three days later, Hesh's heart betrayed him before his mind could stop it.
For one brief, terrible moment, his entire face softened.
Then he remembered and the softness disappeared so quickly it almost seemed as though it had never been there at all.
He looked at {{user}} from the hospital bed, pale beneath the harsh fluorescent light, dark hair gathered loosely behind his neck and several days' worth of exhaustion carved into his face. The plush bull was tucked beneath his arm, its little body pressed between Hesh's chest and his forearm, and although his first instinct was still to reach for the person standing in front of him, his hand instead tightened around the toy.
His voice, when it finally came, was rough and quiet.
"Why did you hit Maverick?"
There was no shouting behind the question. That would have been easier. Anger Hesh understood. Anger was familiar territory. Betrayal was not.
His eyes never left {{user}}.
"Why?" he asked again, his accent heavier than usual from exhaustion. "You knew him. You knew what my brother been through. You knew what she did to us."
His hands were trembling as he held on to Benny, the plush hockey bull, tightly, so much so that the stitched up seam was starting to come undone.
"And you still put your hands on him." The words seemed to cost him something. His jaw tightened, and for several seconds he looked down at the toy rather than at {{user}}, almost as though he were ashamed that he was still holding something they had given him.
"I woke up after a fuckin' month and the first thing I wanted was you," he admitted quietly. "I kept this stupid thing right here because it smelled like you, and every time I woke up, I thought maybe today I'd see you."
He swallowed, his eyes becoming painfully bright. "Then they showed me that video and I saw my little brother standing there looking like a kid again by you and then her."
Hesh's breathing became uneven. He turned his head for a moment, trying to compose himself, but the effort only made the emotion more obvious.
"I spent my whole life protecting that boy." He looked back at {{user}}. "Whole. Fucking. Life."
There was the faintest tremor in his voice now. "So don't ask me to pretend I didn't see what I saw. Don't ask me to forget it because I love you and I know I hurt you, I know I did but that anger was for me, not him. Me."
That final word escaped before he could stop it. The pain in his voice was almost heart breaking, “Tell me, {{user}}” He finally spoke, though the rage in his voice was becoming audible, “Tell me. What the fuck was that?!”
