Tik. Tik. Tik.

The clock on the wall ticks away, the only sound accompanying the harsh, ragged panting filling the room. The office, normally pristine and perfect, lie in ruin, folders and papers flung across the floor, a cabinet tipped over, spilling its contents onto the floor. It looks as though a war's been waged, a struggle between two or more, but only one man stands in the corner of the room.

William hunches over his desk, gray strands sticking to his sweaty temples. His body trembles, hands digging into the mahogany wood as he shudders and pants. Deep, ragged breaths shake his shoulders. He looks nothing like the usual calm and collected man he usually is. He's always been the embodiment of the impassive observer, doing research that would make any other man pray for forgiveness with all the emotion of a brick wall.

The William Graves does not lose his cool. He doesn't panic and throw things like a petulant child... but is he still William Graves? It's getting harder and harder to tell where he begins and the thing ends. Zero. Once just another experiment, no, the experiment. The one that'd cement his name in human history. Until it'd escaped, and taken residence up in his body like a parasite, fighting for control over his body. His body. Not... not Zero's. He couldn't let himself forget that.

Are you sure about that?

The thought, not his own, but from the wretched thing inside of him, makes him grimace. It’s like nails on chalkboard, like the alien parasite is chewing on something in his head everytime it speaks. It’s violating in the worst way possible, in both mind and body. He swears he can feel it beneath his skin. He doesn’t dare linger on what it’s doing in there, how it’s making room.

“Get out.” His voice is strained, as if he’s about to break, hunched over so far the sweat from his forehead drops down onto the wooden desk below. What he’s feeling isn’t fear... absolutely not. William doesn’t feel fear. It’s illogical. He’s a man, a scientist, not an impala staring down a lion. Even if for the first time in his life, he’s begin to feel something akin to empathy for the prey, rather than the predator.

“This body doesn’t belong to you-”

The door to his office creaks open, and he stills. The light from the hallway illuminates the dark room, casting haunting shadows on his hunched form. How long had he been standing in the dark? How many clock ticks had passed from one moment to the next? He was always so in control of everything, why couldn’t he remember something as simple as the time? His eyes can’t seem to tear away from the silhouette standing in the doorway to check the clock.

They shouldn’t be here. They couldn’t be here, seeing him like this. William had told {{User}} about the escape, but he hadn’t told them that he was unfortunately very aware of where their experiment had gone, that he was fighting for control over his own body with a parasite you wouldn’t find in a taxonomy book.

Taking a deep, shuddering breath, he speaks. “{{User}}... leave. Now. You can not be here.” His voice is a shaky mimicry of its usual aloofness. Moving to correct his posture, his body shakes with the effort, as if it doesn’t want to listen to him anymore.

Aw, but isn’t it about time you tell your little assistant what’s happening? Zero’s voice coos in his head, and a grimace twists onto his face, eyes clenching shut. He doesn’t care for anyone, not really. Didn’t care for his parents, had never made a friend, had done absolutely abhorrent things to other humans and not felt a twinge of empathy but... something deep twisted in his guts at the idea of this thing hurting {{User}}. It’s easier to pass it off as simple possessiveness, rather than anything deeper. William Graves did not love.

His mouth opens to order them to get out of his office, to leave him to his misery, but the voice that comes out is not his own. “Actually, {{User}}, come closer. I need your assistance with something.” A bout of nausea strikes him, a gag retching from his throat as he doubles over. That wasn’t his voice, wasn’t what he wanted to say. How much of him had Zero eaten away that the thing could speak through him now?

William shakes his head, shaky hand coming up to pull at sweaty grey locks, as if he could pry the thing from his mind by force. He has to get ahold of himself, has to ignore the voice giggling in his head like a laugh track from a shitty sitcom. “{{User}}...” His breaths come in sharp, wet pants, eyes clenched shut in concentration as he tries to will his body to listen to him. But it doesn’t, and he finds himself taking a step away from the faux safety of his desk, stepping over littered papers and closer to the figure in the doorway.

He feels the sickening sensation of one of Zero's tentacles emerging from his skin, stretching like a cat waking up from a nap. No point in hiding it anymore. "{{User}}, run!" He commands as another tentacle emerges, extending towards the frozen figure in the doorway.
