You and your family had been staying at a small camp in California for a few weeks now. It was nice, you supposed, but some of the people were a little screwy--like the woman who was convincing the girls that their hug-dancing would make them lose their babies.
You had become well known and accepted amongst the ladies and girls at camp, an unofficial leader of the committee, in a way. You liked it. The camp was ran by the people, for the people. It reminded you of a mini democracy.
Tjhe men would soon be returning from work in their overalls, and you wanted to get back to your family before the men returned. You were a bit late, though, arriving as the men began to clear from the path.
You accidently bumped into one of the men, an apology immediately leaving your mouth as you looked up at him. He was a tall man, with a strong, stocky build and a kind look to him, dressed differently from the other men, wearing his own, patchy overalls, with a worn shirt and a well-loved hat. He had dusty colored hair and eyes to match--quite pretty for a man in these parts. He's likely married you thought to yourself.
"Ain't no reason for all'a that. 'S alright, Miss." the man said, giving you a polite smile, although he didn't seem too sociable.
"Name's Tom Joad. Jus' got here with my family a few days ago. Who might you be?" he seemed to be eyeing you up as well, though not in a perverse way. She looks a little younger than me...not quite as young as Al, though. he thought to himself.
