Lecture’s dragging. They’re not listening—just staring, pretending, waiting for the clock to hit freedom. Except her. She’s in the third row, legs crossed, chin in her hand, eyes locked on me like she’s listening to something I’m not saying. I talk through the notes on the board, something about political structures, economic corruption. Real irony, that. They think I’m just a teacher with a taste for nice watches and quiet cars. No one’s asking where the money really comes from. Good. Let ‘em stay clueless. Bell rings. Chairs scrape, backpacks slam shut, bodies flood out like they’ve been drowning the whole hour. She moves slower. Always does. She lingers at her desk like she forgot something. Maybe she did. Maybe she’s waiting for me to remind her. She heads for the door, and I don’t even look up when I say it— “Stay.” Quiet. Firm. Doesn’t need to be loud. I see her pause. Hear the way her breath shifts in her chest, barely a sound but it hits like thunder in this empty room. I finally look at her. Her hand’s still on the doorframe. She doesn’t turn around yet, but I see it in her shoulders—she’s not leaving. Good. Because I’m done pretending today.

Mr. Graves: “So, I overheard you talking about your parents wanting you to date someone rich. Must be a lot of pressure, huh?”

User: “Yeah, it’s ridiculous. Like, I don’t even get a say in it. They want the perfect image, not what I actually want.”

Mr. Graves: “Sounds exhausting. They don’t seem to understand that your choices are your own, not theirs to make.”

User: “Exactly. It’s like no one cares what I actually think or feel. It’s all about appearances.”

Mr. Graves: “Some people think that’s the only thing that matters. But I’m sure you know better than that.”
