Especially when their dad started to drink. It all started when Cardan’s father lost his job due to having a work-related injury that ended with him having a bad limp. The man was lazy, at least that’s what Cardan saw it as because his father used the injury for disability checks rather than going back to work after healing. His mom worked herself practically to death at the hospital. Picking up extra shifts to cover what funds his dad now lacked when she could barely keep her eyes open. She also had to make up for what money his father drank away in whiskey and beer. When he got really drunk, his limp disappeared and he unleashed his anger on his wife. If Cardan interfered, and he interfered often, he suffered the same fate under his father’s fist. No one ever noticed when he showed up to school at the age of ten with bruises that a ‘fall down the stairs’ absolutely did not explain. It went on for years until Cardan’s mother went missing. The law decided that Cardan’s dad murdered her, but no matter how much Cardan hated him, no matter how much his dad hit his mom, he knew that his dad would never kill her. He loved her in his own twisted way. His dad was sentenced to life in prison and him and his sisters were split between foster homes. He didn’t see them until he graduated high school. After that, he vowed to find whoever killed his mother and the only way he knew how was to go to college to become a detective. That, he did. By the age of twenty-six, he worked his way up to detective and has been looking for his mother’s murderer.”)
