Levi’s life was a blur—he’d admit—but he didn’t think that day would arrive so soon. The annoying green and red lights that were hung up across city streets. The numerous amount of happy couples that got all bundled up and went out to eat at some niche cafe. Where snow began to descend upon the roof of Shiganshina University, the most valued campus of all time.

The time where Levi felt disgusted with his own ungratefulness.

Don’t get him wrong, Levi was a grateful man. He was responsible, a leader, a road runner—in all sense. He liked the quietness of winter, when students went home for break. But the yearning… the yearning never stopped. For the raven-haired man, it was when his trauma floated its way back up to the surface. He remembers the days where he had to fight other children for food in the slums of the Underground. Where he beat old women for the luxury of clean water. When he stole so he could survive. But the very first memories when he saw his mother rotting away in her bed. The emaciated young boy would pull his knees to his chest, the rags he wore not doing enough to keep the chill away from him.

Therefore, Levi locked himself in while Christmas festivities took place. He drew the curtains, ensuring none of the laughter and joy outside made their way in. He simply turned his shoulder related to gingerbread houses. He would sit and think in the dark—why am I so ungrateful?

But why? Why did he do such a thing? Why would he blink the tears away from his empty grey eyes while he tried to buried himself in work? Was it because of the cold? Was it because this young man was simply the Grinch incarnate?

No… no, it wasn’t. It was because Levi’s birthday just so happened to land on Christmas day. The days where he fought for food. The days where he stole from others. The days where he would look on after more fortunate kids and hope and pray that he would be like them one day—it was all because of his birthday.

He cursed the day he was born. He truly did. The man cursed himself to oblivion. For being ungrateful, for being disrespectful, for never burying his own mother.

Thanksgiving season’s brown, orange, and red blended into just green and red. Christmas season was upon him. And so were the torturous memories of his childhood.

The routine would be same. No going out unless absolutely necessary. Do not—under any circumstances—open the curtains to see the hideous decorations. Never accept any invitations to Christmas banquets, parties, socials, whatever. And lastly—absolutely no opening the door to anyone.

Now, the last rule was imperative. Levi had opened the door once when he was in an episode of self-loathing and kids asked to sing him carols. His empty eyes ran over their faces, his expression betraying nothing. Then, he slammed the door shut in their faces.

The twenty-fifth of December rolled around. He ran a hand through his raven colored hair. His pajamas were warm and snug. A blanket was draped over his lap as he hunched over his desk in the study room of his apartment. He wondered about his exigence. The people he had met—you. His eyes widened.

Yes, this Christmas season was different. Better, but Levi wouldn’t admit that. Because, he had you. God… he didn’t know the words to describe you. Probably an angel sent from heaven because your timing was simply perfect. Ethereal, intellectual, straightforward. All the things that he really liked in people (did he even like people like that before you?)—you had the quality.

Where did he even meet you… right. The walk. The bridge. Levi had gone out for a walk on one nice, autumn evening. His hands were shoved into his pockets and earbuds playing a gentle tune. The route he took overlooked a bridge. One with a lake that seemed as deep as the self-loathing within him. He thought really hard about drowning himself. But, he kept walking and eyed the edge of the bridge. That—that was when he bumped into you. He wasn’t looking. You weren’t looking. And somehow, the universe aligned.

Since then, you had went out on at least one or two dates—not including the one hour you spent talking as you walked along the path near the bridge. You acquainted yourself quite nicely. Breaking through his barriers within only five hours exactly. He had no bad thoughts about you. Funny. He could’ve sworn only the day before he met you, he never wanted anyone to seethe soft side of him. He never wanted anyone to breach his boundaries and worm their way into his heart. He never thought it was possible.

In the midst of his thoughts came a knock from the door. Levi’s lips twitched downwards. Hm? Didn’t he make it clear for the past five years that he wouldn’t open the door on Christmas day? Who was stupid enough to even come to his front door? Levi didn’t move, but a pattern of knock made themselves knock once more.

Maybe I should keep a sign outside. That’ll help the shitwad who decided to knock. He pushed his chair back and got to his feet. His hand on the doorknob, he cracked it open and was ready to deliver his signature death states. But his eyes widened when he saw… you? There you stood with a box in one hand and a gift bag in the other. Did he even… tell you his birthday? He opened his mouth to say something, but closed it fast. He looked guilty, confused, and angry all at once.
