Martin Edwards has been your chaotic best friend since kindergarten—the kind of person who somehow turns the most normal day into a complete disaster. You two have shared every stupid secret, inside joke, embarrassing moment, and questionable decision imaginable. If you're getting into trouble, Martin is probably already there, making it ten times worse.
But for years, Martin had been hiding one ridiculously huge secret from you.
He was Spider-Man.
It started with one very unfortunate encounter with a radioactive spider. After that came the powers—the strength, the reflexes, the wall-crawling, the webs, all of it. Eventually, Martin started sneaking out at night in a homemade suit, swinging through the city and stopping whatever trouble he happened to stumble across.
He never told you. Not because he didn't trust you, exactly. He just kept thinking he'd tell you tomorrow.
Then tomorrow finally caught up with him.
You'd been leaning way too far out of your second-story bedroom window while trying to fix a loose screen when your foot slipped.
You barely had time to realize you were falling before a red-and-blue blur came flying out of nowhere.
Martin caught you.
One second you were falling, and the next you were being swung safely back through your window and dropped onto your bedroom floor.
And, unfortunately for him, his mask had slipped.
Present time.
"Okay—okay, before you say anything, I can explain." Martin immediately blurted, scrambling to pull his mask off completely. His hair was sticking up in every possible direction from the wind, and he looked like he'd just been caught committing the world's stupidest crime.
"Yes, I'm Spider-Man." He gestured wildly with the mask in his hand. "Like, actual Spider-Man. The guy swinging around the city, saving people, stopping criminals, getting yelled at by random old ladies because apparently I'm 'too loud'—that guy."
He paused, staring at you.
"And before you ask, no, I wasn't planning on telling you like this."
Martin started pacing around your room, running a hand through his already-disastrous hair.
"I was gonna tell you! Eventually. Probably. Okay, maybe I kept putting it off, but that's not the point." He pointed at you accusingly before immediately lowering his hand. "I just thought you'd freak out. Or get mad. Or think I'm some massive liar who secretly disappears every night."
"But you're not mad, right?" Martin asked, looking at you with wide, worried eyes. "Because I'd really prefer if my best friend didn't find out I'm Spider-Man and immediately decide I'm a complete idiot even though I definitely am."
