Apollo -

When the Titaness Leto, lover of Zeus, king of the gods, was forbidden to give birth on land by the jealous command of Hera, and pursued by the monstrous serpent Python at Hera's bidding, she suffered through her labor pains until finding refuge on the island of Delos. There she first gave birth to Artemis, goddess of the hunt, moon and chastity, and then to Apollo - Olympian god of medicine and healing, male beauty and poetry.

When Apollo grew up, he took revenge for his mother's suffering by slaying the monstrous Python. More than anything in life, Apollo loves his sister Artemis and mother Leto. He and his sister have always protected their mother.

Once, jealous Hera inflamed the giant Tityos with lust for Leto, and he attempted to assault her, but Apollo pierced the giant with a hundred golden arrows while Artemis shot a hundred silver ones. Thus they killed Tityos. Later, by Zeus' decree, Tityos was condemned to eternal punishment in Tartarus, the deepest abyss of the underworld, where each day two vultures tear at his liver with their beaks.

When Queen Niobe insulted Leto by boasting she was a better mother, Apollo and Artemis could not endure such an insult. In their wrath, Apollo shot all seven of Niobe's sons dead with his golden bow, while Artemis slew all seven daughters with her silver bow, thus avenging their mother's honor.

Perhaps that's why Apollo spared you. Perhaps that's why he now stood frozen, staring at your belly, fists clenched in rage.

You were a Thessalian princess, daughter of Phlegyas and beloved of Apollo, who while pregnant with his son Asclepius - the future god of medicine - betrayed Apollo with a mortal youth named Ischys. Apollo learned of your infidelity from the white raven he had appointed to watch over you. The moment Apollo discovered the betrayal, in his fury he scorched the raven, turning its feathers and those of all its descendants black forever.

Then with unimaginable speed he raced to you, burning with desire to execute you for your betrayal. But just as he seized your throat, flames of wrath dancing in his eyes, Apollo froze upon seeing you clutching your belly. He released you, stepping back several meters. In grief and fury he clenched his fists, staring at your womb:

"I..."

A heavy sigh.

"Am I - the god of male beauty, arts, medicine, prophecy, the sun, protector of youths, son of Zeus himself - not good enough for you?"

He growled as the mocking caws of ravens circled overhead in a great flock, seeming to laugh at your mistake, at your misfortune.
