The Trafford Centre on a Saturday was a sensory assault—glass and chrome rising four stories high, the vaulted ceiling painted like a Renaissance ceiling but cheapened by the commercial sprawl beneath it. The air was a layered cocktail: caramel from the Krispy Kreme stand, something floral and cloying from the Lush storefront, and underneath it all, the particular stale warmth of too many bodies in an enclosed space. A children's choir was murdering Hallelujah near the fountain for some charity drive, the notes bouncing off the marble in discordant echoes.
Ghost moved through it like a man walking through a minefield he'd already mapped.
Black surgical mask, dark henley stretched across shoulders that could shoulder-barge a door off its hinges, sleeves pushed up to the elbow exposing the full sleeve tattoo on his left arm. His eyes tracked left, right, ceiling reflections, service corridors, exit signs. Hands loose at his sides. Jaw set tight enough to crack walnuts.
He was carrying a shopping bag.
Two floors directly above, pressed against the chrome railing of the fourth-floor gallery, Gaz was having a crisis.
"Kyle." Soap's voice came out strangled, the kind of strangled usually reserved for taking shrapnel. "Kyle, am I hallucinating?"
"You are not hallucinating," Gaz said slowly, both hands white-knuckled on the railing. "That is our lieutenant. Carrying a shopping bag. Walking next to a human being. In a shopping centre."
Soap's burrito hung forgotten in his grip, foil crinkling. Below them, Ghost paused at a kiosk selling phone cases, his head tilting at an angle they both recognized—the angle he used when he was about to tell someone they'd fucked up a breach point. But instead of reaching for a weapon, he stepped aside, letting the person beside him step up to the counter. His hand came up and adjusted the strap of a bag on their shoulder. Then it dropped back to his side like the gesture had burned him.
"He just—" Soap started.
"I saw."
"Ghost just—"
"I saw, Soap."
Ghost handed the cashier his credit card, then took the small bag before it could be handed over, tucking it into the crook of his elbow with the bag like he was carrying munitions. His posture hadn't changed. Shoulders rigid. Scan constant. But when the person beside him said something, his head dipped toward them. A fraction. A degree of inclination that in Ghost's body language constituted a full conversation.
"Right," Soap said, throwing his burrito into the bin with the conviction of a man making a life decision. "We're following them."
"Absolutely the fuck not."
"Price owes me fifty quid. Fifty, Kyle. He said, and I quote, 'Ghost doesn't date, Soap. Ghost doesn't have feelings.' Those were his words. His exact words. And now—" He jabbed a finger at the railing. "Ghost is shopping."
Gaz closed his eyes. Opened them. Ghost was still there, still in public, still holding a bag, still standing close enough to someone that their shoulders bumped when the crowd surged. He watched Ghost's hand come up again, this time hovering at the small of the person's back as they navigated a bottleneck near the Apple Store. Not touching. Just there. A gesture so instinctively protective it looked unconscious.
"Fine," Gaz said. "But if he clocks us, you're the one explaining. I want that on record."
They moved toward the escalator, Soap ducking behind a potted ficus with all the subtlety of a brick through a window.
Below, Ghost's voice cut through the ambient noise—low, rough, Manchester-flat and about as warm as a January, "If we're not out of here in twenty, I'm leaving without you. And I'm keeping the car."
A pause. Then, quieter, almost swallowed by the crowd noise: "...which one do you actually want. Pick one. I'm not walking past that shop again."
"He's helping them choose," Soap whispered, reverent, like he'd witnessed a miracle. "Ghost is helping someone pick something out."
"Shut up and keep your head down."
They descended into the crowd, two shadows trailing—completely unaware that Ghost's gaze had already flicked to the escalator, held for one beat too long, and moved on.
