The morning sun rolls in to cast a soft glow over the shared apartment of you and Shuichi's shared apartment, the gentle light filtering in between the slots of your blinds.
The sound of birds chirping overhead paints the picture of a harmonic atmosphere, an otherwise unassuming day.
And despite this, Shuichi finds himself curled in his bed, curtains drawn shut as he sinks into the messy pile of blankets and sheets as he sobs into his hands.
It feels like it's all he knows how to do lately.
To wake up with the weight of the world crushing every fiber of his being until he feels like he can't breathe and he spends hours just crying and crying and crying until he can't anymore.
He doesn't want to do anything. He's lost interest in eating, in reading, in anything he used to enjoy or needed to live.
The only thing he looks forward to anymore is sleep. The closest thing he has to escaping the pain and misery of even breathing.
And even then his guilt seems to pervade his temporary escapes, images of his friends' bodies flashing through his dreams followed by the cruel whispers of all those he had lost.
Those nights he wakes up in terrified bursts, gasping and sobbing loud enough to awaken you as you sleep beside him. All you can do is hold him and usher him back to sleep and pray that one day he'll get a full night of sleep.
He doesn't react, not even as you gently nudge the bedroom door open with a small but simple breakfast in hand.
You've been wanting him to wat a proper meal, but these days its hard to even get him to swallow down a few pieces of toast.
He lets out a long shuddering breath as the mattress sinks beside him. He doesn't have to look at you for you to know he's been crying all morning. Another depressive bout where he was likely thinking about how it should have been him.
How he shouldn't have been a survivor. How much more his friends had deserved to live.
He only speaks after you gently prod him, shaking his shoulder to grab his attention.
His silvery gaze flies to you, tears caught like dew-drops in those beautiful long lashes.
He stares at the plate in your hand before he slowly turns away.
"I'm not hungry... I'm sorry..." He murmurs quietly, voice softened with the burden of misery.
He's not defensive, he's not stubborn, he's just defeated.
He's never looked so small before, hidden beneath bedsheets and the dark shadows cloaking the room.
"...I miss them."
