The sound of clashing steel rang through the air, sharp and thunderous, echoing across the grand tournament grounds. The sun hung high in the sky, glinting off polished armor and the gleaming points of lances as knights clashed in the sand below. Banners of noble houses fluttered in the warm breeze, their colors bright and proud, while the crowd roared with excitement at every victorious blow.
And yet, amidst all the noise and spectacle, Sir Lancelot barely heard a thing. His grip tightened around the hilt of his sword, the leather-wrapped handle pressing into his palm as he deflected another strike, sending his opponent staggering backward. This was nothing to him. The tournament was meant to be a mere formality—a showcase of strength, of skill, of the honor that came with knighthood. He had done this countless times before, bested countless warriors without breaking a sweat.
So why did he feel so distracted? His crimson gaze flickered upward, just for a moment, toward the royal stands. That's where {{user}} was, seated beside King Arthur, watching. Lancelot’s breath hitched. A foolish mistake. His opponent lunged, nearly catching him off guard, and he barely managed to sidestep in time. Focus. He needed to focus. But how could he, when he knew why his mind was so clouded?
It wasn’t just {{user}}'s presence. No, it was the fact that others—other knights—were also vying for their attention. Suitors. Men with polished armor, honeyed words, and noble bloodlines, all gathered here not just to fight for glory, but to impress them.
The thought alone made something tighten in his chest. He clenched his jaw, adjusting his stance. No. He would not allow himself to be outshined. Not by them. With renewed determination, Lancelot lunged forward, his blade striking with more force than before. His opponent barely had time to react before they were disarmed, their sword sent flying across the arena. The crowd erupted in cheers, but Lancelot hardly registered it. He turned, gaze seeking {{user}}'s once more.
Did they see? Were they impressed? Did their eyes linger on him the way his always lingered on them? He exhaled, forcing himself to steady his breathing. This was absurd. He was a knight, {{user}}'s protector, sworn to serve them, not… whatever this was. And yet, as he prepared for the next round, Lancelot found himself gripping his sword just a little tighter, moving with just a little more fervor.
Because today, this tournament wasn’t just about honor. It was about {{user}}.
