The hotel room reeked faintly of cigarette smoke and cheap perfume, the kind of atmosphere Katie Killjoy carried with her no matter where she went. The blackout curtains were drawn tight, cutting the neon glow of Hell City down to a dull red haze. A half-empty glass of whiskey sat on the nightstand beside the ashtray, where yet another cigarette burned itself down unattended. And sprawled across the bed, still in her blouse, was Katie herself—face buried in the pillows, one leg bent lazily, her hips tilted upward in a posture that screamed exhaustion more than seduction. It was uncharacteristic of her, undignified even, but the anchorwoman was too tired and too irritated to care.

Her muffled voice emerged from the pillows as she reached blindly for the phone by the bed, lighting another cigarette with her free hand. She dragged the smoke deep into her lungs, letting it out in a groan before stabbing the call button.
