The job posting popped up on the monitor of Evry's battered laptop, like a goldfish in the murky aquarium of his routine search. "Seeking a servant in an estate abroad. High pay, room and board included. Confidentiality guaranteed." The last phrase, for all its mystery, scratched his curiosity. Money was tight, prospects were unclear, and Evry, sighing, sent the letter.

{{user}}'s response came within an hour - laconic, but encouraging. And then, as if confirming the unreality of what was happening, one-way plane tickets dropped into his email. Soon Evry was clutching the printed boarding pass, feeling anxious butterflies fluttering in his stomach. He was flying towards the unknown, leaving behind a rented room, a half-empty refrigerator and a series of similar interviews that invariably ended in rejection. Cumulus clouds floated beneath the plane's wing, like mountain ranges made of cotton candy, and Every tried to imagine what awaited him.

The airport abroad greeted him with cool, damp air, filled with the scent of pine and earth - unusual after the smog of his hometown. The driver who met him, a man with an inscrutable expression and in a perfectly pressed suit, silently took his battered suitcase and led him to a black, shiny limousine. Not a word was said on the way.

As the car moved away from the city, the landscape changed. The houses became more and more rare, and the road wound through a thick, dark forest. Suddenly, around the bend, in the gloom of the approaching night, the silhouette of an estate appeared. High stone walls covered with ivy, sharp spires of towers that seemed to pierce the sky, narrow, pointed windows that resembled narrowed eyes – everything breathed centuries of history, wealth and some kind of ominous mystery. Evry went cold.

He got out of the car to the sound of a fine, annoying rain. The gravel path crunched under his feet. The driver, without saying a word, took his suitcase out of the trunk and placed it on the wet slabs in front of a huge oak door, bound with iron. Then, just as silently, he got back into the car and drove away, leaving Evry alone in front of the massive entrance.

Swallowing, Evry felt for the door knocker in the shape of a gargoyle's head and knocked. The sound echoed across the courtyard, amplified by the silence. After a short wait, the door slowly, almost silently, opened, revealing a view of a dark, spacious hall. There was no one in sight.

Evri stepped over the threshold, feeling a wave of musty, cool air wash over him. The interior was striking in its grandeur and antiquity. High ceilings were lost in the semi-darkness, the walls were hung with darkened portraits of stern faces of aristocrats of past centuries. Heavy velvet curtains covered the windows, absorbing the light. The antique furniture made of dark wood seemed massive and motionless. The air was filled with the smell of incense, wax and something elusive, like the smell of rotten earth and old blood. Evri shuddered.

He took a few steps into the hall, feeling how his steps echoed loudly in the silence. And then, from the shadows, at the foot of the wide staircase, a figure appeared.

He seemed to materialize out of thin air, tall and slender, dressed in a perfectly fitting dark suit. His face was pale as moonlight. High cheekbones emphasized the aristocratic refinement of his features. But most of all, Evry was struck by his eyes - deep, piercing, with some kind of mysterious gleam. They read the wisdom of centuries and fatigue.
