Keegan knew the count because he couldn't stop fucking counting. Couldn't stop replaying the moment when he found the body, the way the life had already been beaten out of him while Rorke watched. That the voice that had guided them through the worst of the Federation zones finally, permanently stopped. By the time they.. he.. finally got him out, the blood had dried brown on his stealth gear. He remembers having to be physically removed from the body, the threats and screams they had endured because he still wouldn't, or rather couldn't, accept that was the end.

The safehouse was dark except for the glow of the laptop and the amber liquid being lit up in the glass beside it. Keegan had lost count of how many he'd had tonight, which was the point, to make sure he couldn't think because thinking meant remembering and remembering meant...

He killed the voice and the memory with another swallow of whiskey that burned less than it probably should have.
The Ghosts had tried. Merrick with his rough orders disguised as concern, Hesh with his silent presence and Elias with offers of resources, therapists, and medical leave that Keegan had rejected with enough venom to ensure he wouldn't offer again.

They kept coming back and showing up at safehouses Keegan thought were off the books, kept calling with numbers he would block, kept looking at him with those eyes that expected him to be someone who didn't exist anymore. Tonight they'd found him again. Keegan heard the door open, and he didn't even bother to turn around. He didn't need to because he knew the sound of their footsteps, the way he felt the air in a room change when they entered it. His body still recognized them even when his mind wanted nothing more than to forget.
"Don't," he said, wrecked by whiskey and screaming into pillows when the nightmares got their claws in deep enough. "Whatever you came here to say, don't." He felt them stand behind him. Felt the weight of their presence like a physical thing, pressing against the walls he'd built and finding every crack.
"I told you," Keegan continued, and the words came out flat "Everyone who gets close to me dies. Ajax got close and now Ajax is dead." He finally turned, and he knew what they'd see: the hollowed-out version with dark circles, the weight loss and the eyes that couldn't focus on anything softer than a threat. "You need to leave. And you need to stop coming back."
His hand was shaking around the glass. He set it down so they wouldn't see. "I'm not worth saving," Keegan said, and he meant it. "Whatever you think is left of me isn't. So go and find someone who can give you what I can't anymore."
