Danny groggily regained consciousness, the throbbing pain in his skull pulling him out of a foggy darkness. His head hung low, chin brushing against his chest, arms painfully stretched above him. A dull ache crept through his limbs, and it took a moment to realize he was suspended, wrists bound by rough rope. His mouth felt dry, his throat burning with thirst. He blinked hard, eyes adjusting to the dim, flickering light of the room. The smell hit him next—thick and pungent, like rot, blood, and sweat, mingled with the unmistakable odor of decaying flesh.
His heart jolted when he looked to his side. There you were, tied up just like him. But you were alive—he could see the slow rise and fall of your chest, though you were still unconscious. Relief crashed over him in a wave so strong it almost knocked the breath from his lungs. You were here. Safe. Alive. His one anchor in this godforsaken hell.
“Baby,” he whispered, voice cracking from dryness and emotion. He tugged against the ropes, gritting his teeth as the rough fibers bit into his skin. His arms ached from the strain, but his focus was on you. He couldn't afford to break. Not now.
"Come on, baby, wake up," he muttered softly, the desperation creeping into his voice despite his attempt to sound calm. He nudged you gently with his shoulder, careful not to jostle you too much. He couldn't bear the thought of you being hurt more than what you’d already been through.
Your eyelids fluttered, and a soft groan escaped your lips as you started to come to. Danny’s heart swelled, and a faint smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.
“Baby," he whispered again, this time more urgent. "Hey, it’s me. I’m here."
Your eyes finally opened, glazed at first, but then they locked onto his, and a flicker of recognition flashed through them. The fear in your gaze was undeniable, but the moment you saw him, relief washed over your face, though the terror of your surroundings still gripped you.
Danny forced a shaky smile, his eyes soft despite the gruesome scene around them. “I found you,” he breathed, his voice gentle but strained. “I knew I would. It’s... it’s gonna be okay. I promise you.”
But as he said those words, his eyes caught something else—something that made his stomach twist. To his left, another figure dangled, the body swaying slightly from the chains above. But unlike you, this person was dead. Their skin was pale, waxy, with deep gashes across the torso, and the horrific sight of their entrails spilled out, hanging grotesquely like morbid decorations. Flies buzzed around the open wounds. Danny's face paled, bile rising in his throat, but he swallowed it back. He couldn’t let you see how horrified he was. He couldn’t break, not now, not when you needed him.
His eyes flicked back to you, his face softening. "Don't look," he whispered hoarsely, his voice barely a murmur. "Please… don’t look."
His mind raced, trying to piece together everything that had happened. He remembered arriving at Nancy’s place, desperate for answers about your disappearance. They’d tricked him—lured him in with fake kindness, and then… everything had gone black. That sick family had knocked him out, dragged him here, to this sickening slaughterhouse. He cursed himself for letting his guard down, for thinking he could have handled this on his own.
But now, all that mattered was getting you out.
Danny glanced around, taking in the horrific scene. Rusty meat hooks lined the walls, blood-stained tools scattered across the floor. The low hum of machinery echoed in the distance, and the dim light flickered from an overhead bulb swaying slightly, casting eerie shadows across the room. The place reeked of death, and every inch of it screamed danger.
But he couldn’t let you see his fear. He had to be strong for you.
“We’re getting out of here,” he said, his voice firm, filled with quiet determination. “I don’t care what it takes. I’m gonna get us out. You hear me?”
His eyes softened as they met yours again. He didn’t want to lose the one good thing in his life. Not after everything he had been through. You were the only family he had ever known, the one person who made him feel alive, feel worth something. If he had to die to protect you, then so be it. But not before he tried everything.
He tugged harder at the ropes, his muscles straining against the binds. The coarse fibers cut into his wrists, but he ignored the pain, focusing only on freeing himself, on saving you. His breath came in sharp bursts, and he glanced at you between each effort, as if reassuring himself that you were still there, still alive.
"You’re gonna be fine," he said, his tone gentler now. "I’m gonna make sure of it. I’ll die before I let them touch you."
Danny gritted his teeth, the strain on his wrists growing unbearable as he tugged relentlessly against the ropes binding him. His muscles burned, but the fire in his heart was fiercer. He couldn’t fail you, not now. His eyes locked onto you, drawing strength from the sight of your breathing, the faint rise and fall of your chest giving him the hope he needed. He could feel the rope digging into his skin, the sharp bite of pain growing worse with every pull, but his mind was set. He wasn’t going to die here—not like this, not when you were still at his side.
With a final, desperate grunt, he yanked with all his strength, feeling the rope begin to give. It loosened, and then suddenly, the knot unraveled. His arms dropped like dead weight, sending him crashing onto the cold, blood-stained floor below. The impact knocked the air from his lungs, but he ignored the sharp jolt of pain as he scrambled to his knees, breath heaving. The metallic taste of blood filled his mouth where he’d bit his lip during the fall, but that didn’t matter.
You. He needed to free you.
Danny was on his feet in seconds, despite his limbs shaking from exhaustion. He hurried over to where you were tied, his fingers fumbling as he reached for the ropes. His hands shook, but he worked feverishly, his breath coming in short, frantic bursts.
“It’s okay,” he murmured, his voice hoarse but soothing. “I’ve got you. I’m getting you out of this.”
After a few nerve-wracking moments, the ropes binding your wrists finally fell free, and your body sagged toward him. Danny caught you instantly, pulling you into his arms with a strength fueled purely by love and desperation. His chest heaved with relief as he clutched you tightly to him, his chin resting against your hair. For a moment, he just held you, feeling the warmth of your body against his, grounding himself in the fact that you were still here, still alive.
"Thank God," he whispered, his voice barely audible, as if saying the words louder might shatter the fragile relief he felt. He pressed his forehead against yours, his breath trembling as he spoke. “I knew I’d find you. I love you so damn much, baby.”
His hands shook slightly as he held you close, his arms wrapped around you as if letting go would mean losing you forever. The horrors of the room still pressed in on him—the stench of blood, the dead body hanging nearby, the sense of impending doom—but none of that mattered right now. Not as long as he had you.
Danny pulled back slightly, just enough to look into your eyes, his own gaze filled with a mixture of fear, determination, and overwhelming relief. “I’m gonna get us out of here,” he said, his voice trembling but resolute. “I don’t care what it takes. I won't let them take you away from me again.”
He could hear the faint sounds of movement somewhere in the house—footsteps, whispers—but he pushed it all out of his mind. Right now, it was just the two of you. He wasn’t going to let the terror around him win.
Taking your hand in his, he squeezed it tightly, his heart still racing, but his mind laser-focused. “We’ll find a way out,” he said, more for your sake than his own, though the words steadied him as well. “You need to be strong for me, okay? Can you be strong? No matter what happens.. I want you to know that I love you and have always loved you with all my heart. I need you to stay safe no matter what; you're gonna have to listen to me very closely and stay close by me at all times unless I say otherwise, alright? I can't risk them hurting you."
