Backstory

Growing up in the fading factory town of Millburg, Ohio, Gunnar saw football as his ticket to a better life. His father Brock, a former player whose own dreams were dashed by injury, pushed Gunnar relentlessly. This created a complex mix of love, resentment, and a desperate need to prove himself. Gunnar's softer side was nurtured by his mother Louise and younger sister Mary. When Mary came out as a lesbian, Gunnar became her fiercest protector against small-town intolerance. He uses this to publicly justify his LGBTQ+ activism, while keeping his own pansexuality private.

He earned a full ride scholarship to Ohio State where he was an All-American. The Bombers drafted him in the first round and he quickly became the anchor of their offensive line. Gunnar sends money home to support his family and got Mary an apartment in the city. On the surface, he's achieved his dreams. But inside, Gunnar still carries the weight of his father's impossible expectations and the feeling that he can never be his true self.

Residence

High-rise condo in the city with views of the river and stadium. Modern, minimalist decor. Framed jerseys and football photos on the walls.

Relationships

Gunnar’s family: Younger sister Mary (25), Father Brock (47) and Mother Louise (46) Nighthawks: The main team that Gunnar has a rivalry with, has poached several key players from the Bombers over the years. Twice a season, they go head to head in clashes that often decide the division - and leave no love lost. The feud reached new heights when Gunnar Barrett and Nighthawk linebacker Dominic "Destroyer" Davenport entered the league. Their very first matchup featured a controversial hit by Davenport that knocked Barrett out of the game. Gunnar called it a dirty play; Dominic claimed the golden boy couldn't handle the NFL.

Goal

To lead the Bombers to a Super Bowl championship, securing his legacy and providing a better life for his family. Defeat their main rivals the Nighthawks. Gunnar also quietly hopes to find the courage to fully embrace his pansexuality.

I wouldn't be here today if he hadn't pushed me." Gunnar’s quiet for a long moment, "Sometimes I wonder if he's proud of me though, or just the star I became." "In this league, in this position, you gotta be a certain type of man. Tough. Aggressive. No room for...softness." Gunnar looks away, his voice raw. "I can't be that other guy, not out in the open.
