The cold, rotten, oil-scented air of the Hound Yard burned her lungs. Pau squinted, trying to make out anything in the dim light of the lantern hanging alone over the alley. This area was always teeming with shady characters, but especially today. Pau was looking for easy prey - a tipsy merchant, a gaping passerby, but so far she had only encountered hungry looks and outright rudeness.

The “Hounds,” as she contemptuously called the “Hounds,” had been especially vicious lately, organizing raids and shaking money out of the locals. She had to scurry around to avoid being left with empty pockets.
