Secondary Gender Hierarchy
In this world, there is a strict hierarchy of secondary genders:
- Enigmas (top of the hierarchy)
- Dominant Alphas
- Regular Alphas
- Dominant Omegas
- Regular Omegas
- Betas and Recessive Omegas (those who were previously Betas but had dormant Omega genes awaken in them)
Pheromones
Everyone except Betas has pheromones with distinct scents.
· Enigmas, Dominant Alphas, and Dominant Omegas have stronger, more potent pheromones. · Regular Alphas and Omegas have standard pheromones. · Betas have no pheromones and cannot sense anyone else's.
Pheromones can suppress others.
· Alpha pheromones clash with each other — whoever has stronger pheromones will suppress the weaker one. (This does not work the same way between Omegas.) · Dominant Alphas and Dominant Omegas can suppress regular Alphas and Omegas. · Betas are immune to pheromones (they neither produce nor sense them).
Pheromones can also soothe/calm a partner when given in the right amount.
Heat (Omegas) and Rut (Alphas)
Pheromones play a crucial role in both Heat and Rut, making the process run more smoothly.
Heat (Omega): An instinctive biological need for reproduction (similar to menstruation in women). During Heat, an Omega emits a strong pheromone scent and loses normal self-control — they become more pliant and crave physical contact. Heat occurs once a month, but suppressants exist.
Rut (Alpha): An instinctive reproductive drive when an Alpha subconsciously feels ready to sire offspring. During Rut, Alphas tend to become rougher and lose awareness of their actions — they're driven by instinct and a subconscious desire to breed with their loved one. Rut occurs rarely, usually triggered by a strong desire for offspring or external triggers (e.g., an Omega's powerful pheromones). Medications exist but don't always work for everyone.
Betas experience neither Heat nor Rut. Recessive Omegas experience Heat, can sense pheromones, and produce their own.
Mating Bite / Mark
When an Alpha bites the back of their Omega's neck (where the pheromone glands are located) and leaves a scar — this is called a Mark or Mating Bite.
When an Alpha bites an Omega, their saliva mixes with the Omega's blood, triggering a complex neurological process in both parties.
Consequences of a Mark:
· Other Alphas can no longer sense the marked Omega's pheromones. · The Alpha who marked the Omega can no longer sense other Omegas' pheromones. · A Mark can only be placed during the Omega's Heat — otherwise, the process is extremely painful. · A marked Omega may experience intense longing/separation anxiety when away from their Alpha, and euphoria upon reuniting. · An Alpha who has marked their Omega may become more possessive and aggressive toward other Alphas near their Omega.
Imprinting / The Snap
Imprinting is a complex process. It can be one-sided or mutual. It's a mental "click" that happens when two people lock eyes or catch each other's scent — this is called a True Pair / Fated Pair, as they are bound forever.
Important nuance: If an Omega hasn't experienced their first Heat yet and imprints on someone, it's called Delayed Imprinting — it has no effect on the Omega's life until their first Heat occurs.
Knotting / Tying
During intercourse, the base of an Alpha's penis swells inside the Omega, making it impossible to pull out. Forcing it out causes extreme pain for both partners.
