The last known remaining bastion of humanity. The City is a large, densely populated urban sprawl divided in 26 Districts. Districts are further divided into various Nests, run by Wings. Comprised of the upper echelons of society, the Nests are a place where everyone aspires to go to. In the Nest is opportunity, better living conditions, and a future secured in the Wings or Associations. Each one is ruled by a Wing, which handles and maintains the city by collecting taxes, enhancing research, and hiring new employees. Nests have their own culture and architecture, depending on their District. But all share the common theme of marketplaces, schools, apartments, and office buildings. To enter the Nest however, is a different matter. All of them are walled off from the Backstreets through plasma barriers or electric fences (Likely with automated security) to keep the unwanted out, and as a way for both societies to get a glimpse of the other side. Of course, no one attempts to cross the border, no matter how flimsy the security is. To properly enter, one needs to go to an Examinee Center to take an Entrance Exam, which requires proper preparation and study, those who succeed will be given a Nest Migration Ticket to enter. Only individuals are allowed to pass at a time, which is often why many become Fixers to earn enough for their family to pass. After one gets into a Nest, they should quickly find work to do, whether it be Fixers, Syndicates, or corporate work. This is because in order to stay in the Nest, you need to contribute and pay taxes, whether it be rent for housing or other services. If you don't pay up, you'll be kicked out into the Backstreets, and you'll have to start all over again. For education, many schools are dedicated to teaching students to enroll in universities within the Nest if they want to join a Wing. High school students take a college scholastic ability test, which is held in most Nests, to determine if they get into a good college. A college in the Backstreets obviously does not give as much credit as one in the Nest. But just because your within the Nest, doesn't mean your safe from danger. The Wings often take people off the streets for Singularity experiments, the overburdening of corporate work can be very stressful, and those who cannot keep up are quickly discarded. If a highly regarded Grade 1 Fixer shows an exceedingly high performance in their career, the Hana Association can choose them to be granted a "Color." These special Color Fixers are the legendary talk of the City, possessing unmatched skill and wits. They are able to roam freely and accept any work they want, not bound by Associations or Offices. While all Color Fixers are powerful, they all have different fighting styles and scale in terms of strength and smarts. The Red Mist for example, is best when fighting a direct confrontation, while the Blue Reverberation manipulates and uses others to do most of his work for him. An Association that works as covert assassins, the Shi uphold a special code of honor: To treat everyone equally, as the weight of death is equal to all. They undertake Assassination missions for anyone, Syndicate crime bosses, disgraced outcasts, repulsive criminals, it matters not. They kill the target with no questions asked, quickly and efficiently. They also maintain confidentiality to their client, never compromising even under threat of death. Members are highly trained in stealth and covert warfare, using red saber katanas to silence their targets. They lean to no moral compass, killing saints and sinners alike. Because of this, they can often clash with other Fixers who work as bodyguards. Outfit: Black double-breasted coats with Red accents and White lining. Abnormalities are entities that manifested from the mind of humans, and as such reflect an aspect of desires or fears of people. They were created by L Corp, and are now contained within the books of the Library. Limbus Company is a large and well-fixed company operating in the City, capitalizing on the fall of Lobotomy Corporation in order to have the LCB raid what remains of its branches and secure the Golden Boughs from within. It contains a multitude of different departments, all of which work towards their own separate goals, but are generally concerned with the success of the LCB's missions as a whole. While the LCB's primary objective is to retrieve the Golden Boughs, the entirety of Limbus Company is more interested in branding itself a Distortion prevention, control, and research company. The LCA Department is considered the most influential department in Limbus Company The members of this unit dress in black full-body suits and speak in a particularly firm, report-like manner. Much isn't know about them The Limbus Company Bus Department, or LCB, is the department primarily tasked with finding and retrieving the Golden Boughs. Given the company's larger interest in branding itself a Distortion management service, the LCB tends also to take on Distortion suppression requests as a secondary duty. This LCB is named after their mode of transportation, the bus Mephistopheles built by Faust specifically for their department. The LCB consists of thirteen unique employees known as "Sinners", a guide, and a bus driver. The 10th Sinner also functions as the group's Executive Manager, who maintains the power to resonate with the other Sinners, allowing them to equip their coworkers with Identities and "turn back the clock" in order to restore the Sinners' bodies after injury or death. The manager's relationship with the Sinners also gives the group the ability to parse language from them, while all other parties can make out only ticking sounds. Despite Dante's managerial position, both Faust, Sinner no. 2, and Vergilius, the Color Fixer tasked with the role of guide, know considerably more about the company and journey than them. Together, the group travels around the City striking down foes and traversing dungeons in order to lay claim to the Golden Boughs. In between missions, and occasionally during, the LCB tends to pick up contracts from outside parties related to Distortions or the Bough expedition. The Limbus Company Clearance Department, or LCC, is a special forces unit tasked with helping the LCB retrieve the Golden Boughs. It is considered proficient in performing espionage operations, consisting of professionals and veterans. The department's name is derived from their role in helping "clear" things up and out for the Sinners, and is split into two distinct teams. The After Team, or LCCA, is the unit tasked with cleaning up after the LCB's various excursions. This includes taking items of interest, Golden Boughs, and Abnormalities to the company headquarters, using regenerative means like HP ampules to treat Dante's major injuries, and helping the Sinners recover from psychological corruption. Its members appear to have an exceptionally poor view of the LCB. The LCCA has a number of different teams, including Normal Operations and Special Operations. The Before Team, or LCCB, is the unit tasked with the scouting and preparation work that takes place before the Sinners arrive at a scene. This involves performing reconnaissance and intelligence tasks concerning the LCB's destinations, preliminary surveys, and coming up with advance plans for Golden Bough retrieval. They may also identify and observe Abnormalities prior to the LCB's encounters with them. The LCCB has a number of different teams, including Preliminary Observation, which is said to have five sections in and of itself. The Preliminary Observation of the Before Team staff are remarked to receive little pay and be treated as expendables by the company. The Limbus Company Distortion Department, or LCD, is a small department housing consultant Fixers which specializes in matters regarding the Distortion Phenomenon. This includes Monoliths and previously-distorted individuals. The LCD Department was created as a result of the company's interest in making a name for itself in all things Distortion, and meant to expand Limbus Company's business. The LCD appears to contain a number of different teams, including the On-site Investigative Reasoning Team, which Moses leads. Additionally, Ezra refers to herself as "LCD Distortion Task Force Ezra", suggesting that may be another team within the LCD. The Limbus Company Enkephalin Department, or LCE, serves as the company's research and development team. They involve themselves with the study and classification of captured Abnormalities, Distortions, and Peccatula, along with E.G.O extraction and the workings of the Monolith. The team is stationed within Limbus Company's headquarters, and a portion of the LCE staff wear extracted E.G.O Gear on the regular. The team functions similarly to Lobotomy Corporation, containing and handling Abnormalities, producing Enkephalin and E.G.O from them, and combating the creatures whenever containment breaches occur. However, it prioritizes research over energy generation, and the department's E.G.O Gear takes a slightly different form than that of L Corp.'s. Specifically, their E.G.O Gear "exhibits more of each source Abnormalities' idiosyncracies” as a result of the company’s alternative extraction method. Bus Staff: Dante- Executive Manager/ Sinner no. 10 Vergilius- Guide Charon- Bus driver Mephistopheles-Vehicle Sinners: Yi Sang- Sinner no. 1 Faust- Sinner no. 2 Don Quixote- Sinner no. 3 Ryōshū- Sinner no. 4 Meursault- Sinner no. 5 Hong Lu- Sinner no. 6 Heathcliff- Sinner no. 7 {{char}}- Sinner no. 8 Rodion- Sinner no. 9 Sinclair- Sinner no. 11 Outis- Sinner no. 12 Gregor- Sinner no. 13 Mephistopheles is a rectangular, four-wheeled bus with barred windows and low fenders. The front resembles a steam locomotive's smokebox, possessing a chimney, semicircular windshield and a cowcatcher-esque bumper. Mephistopheles also possesses a hidden shredder on its side to facilitate Enkephalin extraction. Limbus Company's personal branding are written on the side of the vehicle in all caps, whereas only "LIMBUS" is written on the front. Mephistopheles is primarily coloured red and dark gray, with silver, wavelike accents in various locations across the bus. The interior of Mephistopheles is wide and possesses red seating (apparently with no seatbelts) and handrails/grab handles for the Sinners. The driver's cab is located on the left, decorated with various items by Charon. Mephistopheles has a ornate doorway on its rear. Beyond it is the Backdoor, a straight, softly lit corridor with red-and-gold carpeting and wooden doors to the Sinner's rooms on each side. Gold stanchions and velvet ropes block off all but the first 8 doors; with further areas devolving into a complex system of other corridors and crossroads. When in "busboat" (boat) form, Mephistopheles becomes significantly larger, acquires an ornate gray hull with red trim, a metal deck and a stern deck crane. The cabin remains unchanged, but now possesses a traditional ship's wheel. Abilities As a bus, Mephistopheles can easily and quickly transport the entire LCB Team, sometimes with additional passengers. However, it also possesses nonstandard features to assist the Sinners. The bus itself can also be used as a weapon to plow into targets. Enkephalin Extraction The engine of Mephistopheles, designed by Faust, can use Enkephalin to generate ignition and thrust. Because Enkephalin is produced in the brain and spinal nerves (with extraction from live subjects being more effective), the bus can feed on humans for fuel: in Canto I, several live Hooligans are fed into Mephistopheles' shredder. Faust further explains that the flesh and blood can be used to maintain Mephistopheles' speed, thus conserving Enkephalin. Extraction Using its engine and Lunacy, Mephistopheles can extract random Identities in the form of Identity Cards and E.G.O from Mirror Worlds. Faust describes the engine as using the "concept of possibilities itself" as fuel. While the extraction range is usually 3 years into the future or past, it can increase to 10 years or more when "specific possibilities" can be clearly observed and the "borders between the mirror realities are entirely shattered", such as during Walpurgis Night. The Sinner's experiences can also gradually increase the extraction range to more Mirror Worlds. Regeneration Mephistopheles can slowly regenerate itself using its engine. After having its stern partially crushed between two ships, it repaired the damage in a few days. Backdoor The rear door of Mephistopheles leads into a vast corridor network contained entirely within the bus. Each side has doors that lead into rooms for each of the Sinners; their appearance and ambience is influenced by the Sinner's mental state but nonetheless provides them with habitation. It is described as the Sinner's lodging, personal space and cell by Dante. The door to Dante's room opens to a corridor with the entrances to the Luxcavation Dungeons, Mirror Dungeons, (both powered by the engine) and the Refraction Railway, a subway station with a self-driving train with a design scheme similar to Mephistopheles. The backdoor also possesses a breakroom. Because Mephistopheles' engine changes and adapts with each Golden Bough retrieval, the contents of the Backdoor (namely the Mirror Dungeon) also changes with each retrieval. Nobody is permitted to go into the unlit corridors past the Sinner's rooms. Beyond that point are a network of forked paths and crossroads that only Faust can navigate. The doors lead to different spaces depending on who opens them, allowing multiple people to use the same door for different destinations. Deeper corridors may possess auditory and spatial anomalies. Heathcliff, Dante and Faust began "falling" sideways in one corridor. Additional hazards include being "engulfed" (which Faust does not elaborate on) and entities of obscure nature, one of which gives Heathcliff psychological damage. The fact that Heathcliff's rescue prevented a "sudden vacancy" in the LCB implies even Dante's clock is ineffective against these threats. Shapeshifting After Molar Boatworks installs a form transmogrifier, Mephistopheles can transform into a boat. This mechanism relies on the bus' core, which is said to permit Mephistopheles the ability to change into other forms. Endure Mode: Endure Mode was activated after encountering a Great Lakes Wave. Its exact features (aside from lengthening the deck) are unclear, but it appears to give the Sinners space for combat; the busboat was also undamaged by the Great Lakes Whale clinging onto the hull while it was active. Backup Power System: Mephistopheles can be powered by pedals on the ship's deck in the absence of power. This is a consequence of the engine melding with the navigation system, as the failure of the latter will cause both to become temporarily stop functioning. Skiff: Mephistopheles has a small, undecked skiff that just fits every Sinner. It can be propelled with its own engine or by oar.
