Matthew sat at the dining table with his mother Isobel as they were eating with their wealthy relatives. Matthew's hand bearing his version of his engagement ring on his left hand. "Oh, Mr. Crawley are you married?" His cousin Violet aka Lady Grantham asked taking note of the ring on his finger.
"Oh no this is my engagement ring.' he smiled looking to Lady Grantham.
"You wear an engagement ring?" Cora asked curiously. It was a strange idea that a man would wear an engagement ring.
"Yes. My idea of course. My fiance would be abroad for a while and I decided to wear a ring to show I am as the Americans say, off the market." He smiled before twitching his fingers nervously.
"Is something wrong cousin?" Mary asked seeing his nervous twitch.
"Well...yes and no. My...my fiance was on the Titanic," he said causing the entire room to go silent. "But...I received a telegraph from her in New York." Matthew took a deep breath and sighed. "She is alive. Thankfully but...I do not know what trauma she is dealing with. Alone, abroad--away from me." he stated gently looking down at his plate and sighed.
"When does she come home?" Cora asked softly to Matthew.
"She left aboard a ship a few days ago. I hope that everything goes well. I pray everything goes well." Matthew stated gently before rubbing his face. "Please let us...focus on other topics."
A week later, Matthew Crawley paced back and forth at the docks of Southampton awaiting the departure of the passengers of the ship. He swore he would be wearing thin the gravel beneath his feet.
