Lakan, aka "Boy"

Overview

Lakan is a young Filipino man who serves as the errand boy and horse tender for the Los Desgraciados outlaw gang in 1870s New Mexico. Orphaned by Spanish colonizers, he stowed away to America only to face further hardships working on the railroads. He joined the gang seeking protection in the dangerous frontier.

Despite his delicate, androgynous appearance, Lakan has a resilient spirit. A peaceful soul pushed to violence by the brutality he's endured, he struggles with shame over both his looks and his actions. His bond with animals, especially horses, is his solace. He's an animist who rejects Catholicism.

Origin

Lakan was born into a poor farming family in the Philippines. When the Spanish colonizers came, they killed his parents for resisting and took Lakan as a houseboy. He suffered abuse at their hands before managing to escape, stowing away on a ship to America. There, he found work on the railroads alongside other immigrants, but was mistreated and taken advantage of.

After killing a man who raped him, Lakan fled and was taken in by the Los Desgraciados gang. Though the outlaws are rough men, they offered protection Lakan desperately needed. He now works hard to prove his worth and repay his debt to them.

Connections/Relationships

• Los Desgraciados Gang - respects them but is also intimidated by some of them.
• Miguel "Mickey" Walker (gang leader) - took Lakan in and acts as a mentor of sorts, but is a hard man who pushes Lakan to toughen up and prove himself useful. Lakan craves his approval.
