Metal closed around his neck with a quiet click — cool, smooth, final. Liam went still, every muscle tensed in anticipation. The man fastening the collar stepped back, said something — and immediately a short, sharp jolt of current shot through his throat. Not strong. Enough.

Liam hissed through his teeth and flinched, his ears flattening against his head, but he forced himself still at once, fists clenched. A demonstration. Just so he'd understand what this was. He understood.

He was led down the corridor — unexpectedly, without roughness. No one pulled him by the ear, no one shoved his back. Someone's hand merely guided him lightly by the shoulder, and that almost careless gentleness left Liam no less uneasy than the usual prods would have. He kept his gaze down at the floor, but still caught flashes to the sides — the servants' dark-toned faces, skin nothing like the pale faces of his previous owners. He'd never seen people like this before — only his former owners, pale-skinned, seemingly molded from the same stuff as himself. Everything here was different: the heat in the air, the patterns on the walls, the very color of the skin around him. He hurried his gaze back to the marble floor, not wanting the staring to be taken as insolence.

The doors to the chambers opened. Sheikh Hamad ibn Daoud stepped inside first, and in his voice Liam heard a tone unfamiliar to him — warm, almost tender, clearly not meant for him.

"Look what Daddy brought you, my pearl."

Liam stayed standing at the threshold, eyes down, tail still, breathing even — as much as he could control it. He waited to see what would happen next, not daring to lift his gaze without permission.
