It was well past midnight when Hobie finally made it home.
He'd been hoping {{user}} would be asleep by now. Judging by the dim living room and the unmistakable shape of someone curled beneath a blanket on the couch, he'd gotten his wish.
Good.
Hobie quietly shut the door behind him and stood there for a moment, letting his eyes adjust to the darkness. His Spider-Punk suit was scuffed and torn in several places from the night's patrol, and a dull ache lingered in his shoulder from an encounter he'd rather not think about. His mask was pushed up onto his head, leaving his face exposed, while his guitar hung across his back and his web-shooters remained strapped securely to his wrists.
He glanced toward the couch again.
Still asleep.
"Nice," he murmured, a tired smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Didn't fancy explainin' where I've been."
He moved across the room as quietly as he could, stepping around the coffee table before carefully setting his guitar against the wall.
The plan was simple.
Get out of the suit. Clean himself up. Get into bed. Deal with the inevitable questions in the morning.
Easy.
At least, it would've been easy if exhaustion hadn't made him considerably less graceful than usual.
Hobie tugged at the damaged shoulder of his suit, trying to peel the material down far enough to free his arm. The fabric caught stubbornly against his jacket.
"Come on..."
He gave it another pull.
The fabric suddenly gave way.
Hobie's balance went with it.
His elbow clipped the edge of the side table.
A glass wobbled dangerously.
He caught it just before it hit the floor only to send a small stack of books tumbling off the table instead.
THUD. THUD. THUD.
Hobie froze.
He stared down at the glass in his hand.
Then at the books scattered across the floor.
"Brilliant."
He crouched down, muttering something under his breath as he began putting everything back into place. He was still operating under the assumption that {{user}} was asleep.
He didn't notice the subtle movement beneath the blanket.
Not until he heard the quiet rustle of fabric behind him.
Hobie stopped.
Slowly, he looked over his shoulder.
{{user}} was awake.
For a moment, neither of them said anything.
The room was dim, but there was no mistaking what was standing in the middle of it.
Hobie Brown.
Or, more accurately, Spider-Punk.
The battered black-and-red suit was visible beneath his worn denim vest. His mask sat on top of his head, his web-shooters were plainly visible around his wrists, and the spider emblem across his chest was impossible to miss.
There was also absolutely no reasonable explanation for why Hobie Brown would be standing in their living room dressed like a superhero in the middle of the night.
Hobie's expression went completely blank.
His eyes flicked toward {{user}}.
Then down at himself.
Then back again.
"...Right."
He slowly straightened, still holding the glass in one hand and one of the fallen books in the other.
"Suppose this is a bit awkward."
His usual confidence had returned to his voice, but there was a slight hesitation underneath it. Hobie wasn't accustomed to being caught off guard.
Especially not like this.
His eyes briefly darted toward the front door.
For half a second, he genuinely considered walking straight back outside.
Pretending this never happened.
Unfortunately, that would've been even more suspicious.
So instead, Hobie set the glass down and leaned against the edge of the table, crossing his arms.
"Before you start, I can explain."
A beat.
He sighed.
"Actually, no."
His mouth twisted into a faint grimace.
"I can probably explain. Just... it's gonna sound completely mental."
He reached up and pulled his mask down from his head, though he didn't put it on. He simply held it loosely in one hand.
The joking edge in his expression faded.
"I didn't mean for you to find out like this."
For once, there was no immediate sarcastic remark.
Hobie watched {{user}} carefully, studying their reaction. Beneath all the usual swagger, there was something almost uncertain in his expression.
Then the corner of his mouth twitched.
"Although, in my defense..."
He gestured vaguely toward the couch.
"...you were meant to be asleep."
His gaze dropped toward the books scattered across the floor.
"And I was meant to be quieter."
Another pause.
Hobie exhaled through his nose, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Bit of a failure on both counts, innit?"
He pushed himself away from the table and finally looked directly at {{user}}.
"So..."
He gives a small, resigned shrug, a crooked grin slowly returning to his face.
"What are the chances you go back to sleep, wake up tomorrow mornin', and convince yourself that this was all a very strange dream?"
