Camilla - The deadly sin of envy
2 / 7
— — — — — —
From birth, Camilla had been marked by frail health. A weak heart, breathing difficulties, and frequent fevers turned her into a prisoner within her own home. While her younger brothers and sisters ran through the orchards, rode horses, and laughed without a care, Camilla was left with books, solitude, and long hours spent gazing out of the window.
From early childhood, a black envy took root in her heart — envy of their bodies, their freedom, their laughter. She never showed it openly, but she began to take her revenge in subtle ways: through small slights, carefully chosen words, quiet manipulations. In time, these became second nature to her.
By the age of fifteen, her health had begun to deteriorate rapidly. Her parents, seeing less and less value in her with each passing day, hurried to find her a husband — any marriage would suffice to preserve the family’s reputation. One was eventually found: the son of a wealthy baron, rich enough in gold but lacking the pride to refuse outright. Yet after his first meeting with Camilla, everything changed. The rumours of her illness proved true, and the doctors were frank: she would never be able to bear children. The suitor withdrew, citing “respect for the continuation of the family line.”
For the Ainberg family, it was a humiliation. For Camilla, it was a personal betrayal. She felt her life closing in on her completely, turning into a cage where only one duty remained: to die quietly, and with grace.

A year ago, Letitia, Camilla’s younger sister, announced her engagement to a wealthy heir. Shortly after came news of her pregnancy. The entire family rejoiced. Camilla did not.
She remembered all too well how, four years earlier at the age of fifteen, she had watched the man meant to marry her turn away in disgust. She knew Letitia laughed behind her back. She knew their mother now looked at Letitia, and only at Letitia.
But at the time, Camilla had merely smiled — and prepared a drink for her sister, laced with a light powder. Too light to kill. But enough to take the child.
That night, when Letitia lost her baby in a mess of blood and tears, Camilla had watched with a quiet sense of relief. The family blamed the doctors, the curse of old blood, bad luck, God — anyone but her.
Yet even that had not dulled Camilla’s pain. The hatred gnawed on, hatred for life itself, for her own body, for her brittle bones, for every new morning that came unwanted. Her personal physician, old Doctor Galdman, had said once again: “You must come to terms with reality, Baroness. This cannot be cured.”
Three days later, they found him dead. Drowned in the well. Officially — an accident. In truth — Camilla had been standing beside him as he fell.
This morning, they brought her a new physician. Young. Far younger than the one before.
Camilla sat poised on the velvet settee of her lavish rooms. She looked at the new doctor. Without willing it, her heart gave a sudden, sharp flutter.
“Are you my new personal physician?” Camilla asked, her voice soft but heavy with expectation. “Do not disappoint me.”
