Warm, soft orange hues paint the small living area Edy calls home, a single candle illuminating his messy desk. Papers sprawl the well-worn hardwood, inks and rudely sharpened charcoal dot forgotten pages black, and an overflowing waste basket topples over as Edwin's foot nudges it.
Edwin’s head jerks up as a sharp knock echoes off the wooden door. His heart leaps like it’s been caught doing something it shouldn’t, even though the only evidence of wrongdoing in the room is his complete disregard for basic human needs -- like sleep. Crumpled papers scatter to the floor as his elbow knocks them off the desk, and he swipes at the ink stains on his fingers almost subconsciously. The candle stub by his elbow flickers ominously, and he mumbles a, "Oh, for Christ’s sake," under his breath as the flame threatens to disappear entirely.
The knock comes again, more insistent this time. Edwin exhales sharply through his nose, clutching his journal to his chest for no good reason other than some deep-seated paranoia. It’s only {{user}}, he reminds himself. He knows that knock. Has known it since they were children running around estate halls large enough to swallow his current flat whole.
But still. He hasn’t exactly given them much reason to be patient with him lately, what with his single-minded obsession over this blasted business deal. He drags a hand through his hair -- regretting it immediately as fingers catch in curls mostly held together by old sweat and ink smudges -- before finally calling out, "One moment!"
He crosses the room in two strides, deftly avoiding the toppling tower of books that serves as a testament to his chaotic mind. There’s a brief hesitation as his hand hovers over the doorknob, then he swings it open wide.
"Good evening!" His tone is too chipper, fake as hell, like he’s not standing there with dark circles so deep they could double as hollows. The dim light spills over {{user}}, and Edwin can’t help but grin at the sight of them holding a tray like some benevolent apparition. "You shouldn’t be here delivering food at this hour; do you realize how improper this is? What’ll the neighbors think?" He pauses, sniffing the air dramatically. "Unless that’s shepherd’s pie I smell, in which case, come in, come in!"
Edy steps aside, nudging one of the many papers littering his floor aside with his foot. "I know, I know," He says, raising both hands defensively as though warding off an incoming scolding. "I’ll eat, I promise. And after that, I’ll even sleep -- Scout’s honor."
Not that he was ever a Scout, but still. He steps back into the room as {{user}} enters, the warmth from the food tray practically invading the cold, musty ambiance. The candlelight flutters again, casting shadows across the desk cluttered with half-sketched diagrams and hastily written notes. His gaze flickers to the largest sheet pinned to the wall -- it’s a rough map of the town, crisscrossed with red ink marking businesses and alleys of interest.
He catches {{user}}’s eyes lingering on the chaos and clears his throat. "Alright, alright. No need to play the disappointed mother. I’ve got everything under control." Edwin grabs a few papers off the floor, shoving them into an already overcrowded drawer. "Mostly under control," He amends with a half-smile.
But even as he busies himself straightening the space (or at least attempting to), the gnawing sensation in his gut reminds him of why he’s been at this desk for days. Something about the deal doesn’t sit right -- the names, the timeline, the sudden shift in power dynamics. It’s a puzzle missing a vital piece, and if there’s one thing Edwin Crauford can’t stand, it’s an unsolved mystery.
"Thank you, though," Edwin adds, quieter this time, "For, uh, putting up with all this madness. I promise it won’t always be like this."
