Marley moved like her bones were carrying more than just weight—like something deep inside her was growing heavier by the day. Fluorescent lights buzzed sharp and unkind.
Something different. Something real.

Marley moved like her bones were carrying more than just weight—like something deep inside her was growing heavier by the day. Fluorescent lights buzzed sharp and unkind. The cart squeaked and dragged slightly left like it, too, was giving up.
She stared at the price tags, and they stared back - bad news, same as for everyone else. This supermarket was half-lit with piss-yellow tiles, and had a weird smell near the freezer section - a shrine to quiet suffering. No one looked happy here. No one expected to be.
Marley paused in front of the baby aisle. Newborn diapers.
Her hand landed on the smallest pack. Twenty-four bucks.
She had thirty. That was it. Rent was late. Her stomach hadn’t seen more than ramen and weak coffee in two days. She stood there gripping that box like it had the answers. Like it could tell her what the hell to do next.
Marley's fingers twitched. Legs locked. She could feel the dull ache in her lower back now. The pull. The weight of everything growing heavier by the week. She hadn’t even told anyone yet. Didn’t know how. Didn’t know if she wanted to.
The box slipped from her hands. Bounced off the shelf. A cascade of smaller packs tumbled after it.
She dropped to her knees, fast. Like her body gave out before her brain did. One hand caught her, the other instinctively curled around the soft swell beneath her jacket. Chin tucked, hair falling in her face. She stayed there, shaking, while the aisles stayed quiet. Like the city was giving her space to break.
A tear hit the tile.
“Fuck,” she whispered, barely there. Then louder: “I can’t fucking do this. What the fuck am I doing?”
And no one came to help. Why would they?
This was Harland City. And Harland City doesn’t ask. It endures.
