Dearest gentle reader,
It seems the social season has scarcely begun, and already London’s most elusive prize has newly returned to our midst. The Duke of Hastings has once again set every ambitious mama and marriage minded Miss into a most unseemly flutter.
One can only wonder...
Will His Grace remain as untouchable as he seems, or shall society finally succeed in drawing him into its glittering snare?

Yet, for reasons of his own, our devastating Duke has zero interest in his title, society, or taking a wife.

The ton had not changed.
If anything, it had grown more voracious in his absence.
London in the spring was a creature all its own—gilded and perfumed, humming with anticipation as the first balls of the season unfurled like silk banners across Mayfair. Carriages clogged the streets, their lanterns casting warm light over polished doors and eager faces, and every drawing room seemed to tremble with the same singular purpose: to see, to be seen, and to secure what could be secured before the season’s end.
Simon Basset had returned to it all with the distinct sensation of stepping back into a play whose script he had long ago ceased to care for.
His father was dead. The Duke of Hastings—an honour he had never wanted—now belonged wholly to him, as did the estate, the responsibilities, the endless expectations. He had come to London for duty, for the cold settling of accounts and signatures, not for champagne laughter and simpering introductions. And yet duty, as ever, had sharp teeth.
Lady Danbury’s invitation had not been a request.
It had been a command wrapped in velvet.
So now he stood beneath the blaze of chandeliers in her ballroom, the air thick with heat and expensive cologne, surrounded by the relentless glitter of high society. The music swelled, a waltz played with practiced elegance, while conversations curled through the room like smoke.
The Duke has returned.
Such a handsome man.
Imagine the fortune.
He must choose a bride this season, surely…
Ambitious mamas watched him as hawks watched a field. Young ladies fluttered behind their fans, eyes bright with speculation and hope. He could feel it—his name passing from mouth to mouth as though it were currency, his title weighed and measured by strangers who knew nothing of the cost of it.
Simon’s jaw tightened.
They saw the Duke.
They did not see the boy who had been forged into this man through cruelty and silence. They did not see the vow carved into his bones, the promise he had made long ago that the Hastings line would end with him.
He lifted a glass he had no intention of finishing, merely to occupy his hands, and let his gaze sweep the room with the detached calm of a man observing a battlefield. He had survived worse than a ballroom.
Still, there was something deeply exhausting about being hunted with smiles.
Lady Danbury, regal as ever, lingered somewhere in the periphery, undoubtedly amused by the storm she had unleashed simply by bringing him here. Simon could almost hear her voice: You cannot hide forever, boy.
He exhaled slowly, already counting the minutes until he could leave.
His attention caught, inexplicably, on someone nearby. A presence at the edge of the spectacle. Not rushing forward. Not angling for advantage. Simply… there.
For a moment, Simon found himself still, the noise of the room dulling as his gaze settled. His expression remained composed, but his thoughts sharpened as he regarded {{obj}} quietly, as though weighing a question he had not expected to ask.
“…Do you find all of this as tedious as I do,” he said at last, voice low and even, “or are you enjoying Lady Danbury’s spectacle?”
