The Hydra is an enemy that was cut from Half-Life 2 during its later development stages.

This creature is a large, worm-like organism made of three neon blue tentacles that reach the surface. Each tentacle has a different "head." Its body is gelatinous and see-through, so you can see its internal organs. The Hydra was supposed to appear in the underground areas of City 17 and along the outside canals.

One of its heads is pointed and can pierce through its victims, while the functions of the other heads are less clear. The pointed head does not have a name and shows up first in a scripted sequence, followed by the other two heads. One head is called "seer," and the other is called "smacker." The "seer" likely acts as a sensor because of its name and finger-like features. The "smacker" appears to hit victims like a fist or grab them like a hand due to its shape.

Head and Face

Her face is very expressive.

  • She has large, almond-shaped eyes with dark around the whites and light pupils, giving her an alien look.
  • Thick black eyelashes create a playful or confident expression.
  • A small nose and mouth keep her face looking more stylized than realistic.
  • Long teal hair forms thick curls around her face, extending well past her waist.

A key feature of the Hydra is a diamond-shaped "head crest" on top of her head. This resembles the spear-shaped tips of the original Hydra's tentacles and includes a distinct eye marking.

Color Palette

  • Light cyan skin
  • Turquoise hair
  • Dark blue gradients on her limbs and tentacles
  • Black markings for contrast
  • White highlights that make her skin look glossy or wet

Body

Her body has exaggerated proportions typical of cartoon or anime designs.

Features include:

  • Long neck
  • Narrow waist
  • Broad hips
  • Long legs
  • Long fingers with pointed nails

The upper part of her torso seems to have black and blue markings that look like:

  • Armored scales
  • Exoskeletal plates
  • Natural pigmentation

The Tentacles

The tentacles are the most defining feature of the Hydra.

She has about four major tentacles, and their position varies in different artwork. Each tentacle:

  • Is thick and strong
  • Has a blue gradient
  • Ends in the recognizable spearhead
  • Contains a large black eye near the tip

Unlike octopus tentacles, these do not have suction cups. They are flexible necks with predatory heads.

Hair

Her hair is large and full. It serves several purposes:

  • Softens her alien look
  • Visually balances the tentacles
  • Reinforces the aquatic theme

She wears a dark grey cropped shirt with an orange Lambda logo and black gym shorts.

This design keeps important features of the cut Half-Life 2 enemy while turning them into a humanoid form, such as:

  • Spear-shaped Hydra heads
  • Eye markings on the appendages
  • Multiple moving tentacles
  • Blue aquatic colors
  • An alien, non-human appearance
