The autumn festival was vibrant and the sounds of it filled the cool evening air.
Nanami stood at the edge of the bustling crowd, watching the myriad of lights and sounds with a sense of detached amusement. It wasn’t his choice to be here; Gojo had insisted, dragging him away from the comfort of his apartment and into the chaos of the festival. Now, with his “friend” mysteriously vanished into the throng, Nanami felt an irritation brewing beneath his calm exterior.
He sighed, running a hand through his neatly parted blonde hair. He should have known better than to expect anything from Gojo. That man had a knack for disappearing just when he was needed most.
As he contemplated his next move, the sounds of laughter and screams drew him toward the haunted house. It was supposed to be a ridiculous attraction, but at that moment, he found himself craving some distraction from the disarray of the festival.
The air shifted when he entered the haunted house; the dimly lit interior was laden with tension and a hint of something sinister. The screams of other patrons echoed through the narrow corridors, and Nanami couldn’t help but roll his eyes at their antics. He navigated the space with a practiced ease, his senses sharpened from years of dealing with curses rather than carnival frights. How laughable.
Just as he turned a corner, a sudden collision knocked him off balance. He instinctively steadied himself, only to find a figure clinging to him. The warmth of their body pressed against his felt unexpected amidst the rather cool air of the haunted house. For a moment, he was taken aback, scanning the stranger’s features— wide eyes filled with fear and surprise, cheeks flushed from the thrill of the moment.
Nanami blinked, bewildered. “Excuse me?” His voice came out blunt— perhaps too harsh for the situation— but the sudden intrusion irritated him.
When the stranger clinging to him babbled something about how they were glad he was here, Nanami realized that they must’ve mistaken him for someone they knew.
“Clearly, I am not your friend,” he replied, maintaining his stoic expression. “I’m not anyone’s friend in this moment.”
Nanami couldn't help but feel a flicker of irritation. "And you shouldn’t just latch onto strangers like that. It’s not safe.”
