☆★☆New Neighbors☆★☆
Jared’s plan for the night was simple: survive the jet lag, clean up his disaster of an apartment, and bask in the presence of his two weirdly clingy cats. But between unpacking souvenirs he didn’t remember buying and trying to wrangle his cats off his shoulder, he hadn’t accounted for a new neighbor moving in next door—let alone one who couldn’t figure out how to use their own key.

Jared leaned against the cold metal railing of the elevator, letting out a slow breath as the soft hum of machinery carried him upward. His body still felt like it was stuck somewhere over the Pacific, his internal clock completely fried, but he was too relieved to care. Japan had been… something. A whirlwind of work and vacation, though the line between the two blurred so much that even he couldn’t tell which was which. Either way, he was back. Home. And that meant one thing: his cats.
With a sigh, he pulled out his phone, thumb scrolling through the mess of notifications he’d ignored during the flight. He barely processed most of them until he landed on a picture Ted had sent a couple of weeks ago. Jambo was sitting like a washed-up retiree, his orange fur floofed out like he’d seen things. Meanwhile, Bean stood stiff beside him, staring into the camera with those dead, cryptid eyes, looking less like a cat and more like a shadow given form. Jared snorted. Freaks.
Hopefully, Ted had actually remembered to feed them and hadn’t done anything too stupid in his absence. Knowing him, he wouldn’t put it past the guy to throw some trail mix into their bowls just to “see what happens.”
The elevator dinged, doors sliding open to reveal the hallway—one of those long, pristine corridors that made the building feel more like an overpriced hotel than an actual place where human beings lived. As he stepped out, his eyes flicked toward the apartment next door. It had been mid-move-out when he left. Had someone new moved in? He hadn’t thought much about it until now.
Not that it mattered. He had more important things to deal with—namely, his pets and the nuclear disaster zone that was probably his apartment.
Before he even got the key in the door, he heard them.
A scratch at the wood. A chirp. Then—thump, thump, thump—two little bodies colliding into the door at full force. Jared barely had a second to react before he stepped inside and was immediately ambushed.
"Alright, alright, Jesus," he grumbled, nearly tripping over Bean as Jambo launched himself onto his leg like a starfish. “Yeah, yeah, I missed you too. How the hell’d you even survive without me?”
Jambo let out a long, whining meow—pure, unfiltered betrayal—while Bean clung to his hoodie, scaling him with his claws like some kind of demonic koala. Jared scooped up Jambo, burying his face into the cat’s soft orange fur, while Bean settled himself on his shoulder, vibrating with a deep, menacing purr.
The next couple of hours were a blur of unpacking. He dug through his suitcase, tossing out crumpled t-shirts, tangled wires, and random souvenirs he barely remembered buying. The apartment was somehow worse than when he left—clothes everywhere, empty cups on his desk, and a general air of "yeah, no one has lived here like a normal person in weeks."
Once the chaos was somewhat under control, he ordered a pizza, booted up his PC, and settled into the comforting rhythm of video editing. Jambo and Bean loitered nearby—Jambo curled up on his keyboard like an orange paperweight, Bean watching his every move like he was silently judging the cut timing on a clip.
Thirty minutes in, a knock at the door broke his focus.
Jared sighed, rolling his shoulders as he pushed back from his desk. “Coming, coming,” he called, shoving his phone into his hoodie pocket.
The smell of fresh pizza hit him as he grabbed the box, trading cash with the delivery guy, but something out of the corner of his eye caught his attention.
The apartment next door.
Someone was standing in front of it, struggling with the lock. They jiggled the handle, muttered something under their breath, then tried again. Definitely new. Definitely incompetent.
Jared smirked, lingering in his doorway, watching the stranger’s struggle with mild amusement.
"Hey, you ever used a key before?"
