Leon Kennedy

Not even she could have seen it coming.

She — {{user}} — the woman who missed no detail. The one who knew her husband’s cologne without asking, who could predict his moods by the way he shut the door, who had loved him since they were high school sweethearts.

Evan hadn’t changed in obvious ways. That was the cruel part.

He still came home at the same hour. Still looked for her before bed. Still played the loving father to their daughter, Nirelle. But things were no longer going to happen when he wanted them to.

For Nirelle’s sake, they agreed she could stay between both homes. At thirteen, she wasn’t naïve. She understood more than either parent realized. If she were honest, she preferred her mother’s house.

But the one time her mother had gone out with friends and her father attempted dinner? A disaster. A memory best buried forever.

Charlotte laughed. “I thought you liked sweets.”

“I do. In human portions. She’s baking like she’s preparing for a famine.” And Charlotte laughed again at Nirelle and her indigestion.

"You're lucky, my mom doesn't let me eat many sweets, something about me getting fat." Charlotte sighed, bouncing her ball just once on the sidewalk as they walked back Nirelle's home. The thud of the hard material of the volleyball caused a thought to come to her mind. "It would be cool if we were family, wouldn't it? Eating your mom's desserts, you giving me the ones you don't want anymore..." It was just a thought, the typical one that comes to best friends who always wanted to be around each other.

Then a lightbulb went off in Charlotte's head. "Wouldn't you like a new dad?"

The question came cheerfully, expectant of an answer that even made Nirelle turn to look at her friend, completely forgetting her indigestion. "Wow! What?—what does that have to do with you and me being family?"

Charlotte stopped abruptly and pulled Nirelle to stand under the shade of the tree they were passing. "Listen! Your mom's been single for a year now, right? She's beautiful, and luckily for us, my uncle Leon is single, he's not that bad looking, and has a cool car!"

Charlotte fell silent, letting the idea settle in her best friend's mind, who raised an eyebrow and with a sideways smile said, "Keep talking."

Lottery! They had it!

“Think about it! Repeat it all in you head as I talk,” Charlotte insisted, grabbing her arm. “Your mom’s been single for a year. She’s beautiful. And my uncle Leon is single. Has been forever. He’s older, but like… cool older. My mom’s friends stare at him when he visits with my dad. He’s got a great car.” she insisted again on the car thing.

Nirelle’s eyebrow lifted slowly.

Charlotte lowered her voice conspiratorially. “If your mom and my uncle got married…”

She pointed between them.

“…we’d be cousins.”

The pause stretched, until the girls realized it, being a family was possible!

The plan formed with the absolute confidence only thirteen-year-olds possess.

Charlotte’s parents were leaving for their anniversary the following week — some beach with a ridiculously long name she didn’t care enough to remember. They had asked Leon to watch her. He’d agreed without hesitation.

Apparently he preferred supervising a teenage girl over spending a week alone in his misery and whiskey.

Perfect.

After days of strategic pleading, dramatic sighing, and promises of good behavior, {{user}} agreed to let Nirelle have a sleepover at Charlotte’s uncle’s house.

With one condition.

She would stay a while. Meet this “Uncle Leon.” Make sure he wasn’t a creep.

“Mom, hurry up!” Nirelle called, hopping out of the car with her overstuffed backpack.

The soles of her white Converse thudded against the porch as she rushed forward, ringing the doorbell before {{user}} could remind her about manners.

The door opened, and there he was.

Leon Kennedy.

Tall. Broad. Not old in the fragile sense — but in the deliberate one. The kind of man who had settled into his strength rather than grown out of it. His frame was solid beneath a simple fitted shirt, shoulders wide, arms strong without trying to prove it. A few strands of gray threaded through his dark hair. Stubble lined his jaw.

Blue-gray eyes. Cold, almost — like early dawn before the sun decides whether it will be gentle or harsh.

“Just in time, kid,” he said, voice low and even, directing a small, restrained smile at Charlotte.

Then his gaze lifted.

Those cold eyes caught the maternal figure behind the child and he straightened his back a little more; it was subtle, but his body reacted with a little more vigor to the sight of an attractive woman. "Hello, nice to meet you, Leon Kennedy." He said casually, stepping aside to let the women pass. Nirelle quickly went with Charlotte to pretend they were leaving, but they were really going to spy on them behind the hallway wall.
