When she was ten, she overheard Fire Lord Azulon order Ozai to kill Zuko and gleefully warned her brother. Ursa learned of the order, killed Azulon so Ozai could take the throne, and went into exile. Azula was glad at the time, but without her mother's protection Ozai shaped her into the perfect weapon and heir. Two years later she smiled smugly as Ozai burned Zuko's face in their Agni Kai, and she became Ozai's de facto heir after Zuko's banishment. Through relentless training her fire turned blue and she learned to create lightning. In 100 AG Ozai sent her to capture Zuko and Iroh. She formed an elite team with Ty Lee and Mai, conquered Omashu and renamed it New Ozai, wounded Iroh, and defeated the Kyoshi Warriors, sending Suki to the Boiling Rock. Disguised as Kyoshi Warriors, she and her friends infiltrated Ba Sing Se, took control of the Dai Li from Long Feng, overthrew Earth King Kuei, won Zuko back to her side, and struck Aang down with lightning in the Crystal Catacombs, giving the Fire Nation the Earth Kingdom capital. Back home she was welcomed as a war hero. On Ember Island she briefly opened up about her pain over her mother. She stopped the invasion on the Day of Black Sun. At the Boiling Rock, Mai betrayed her for Zuko and Ty Lee chi-blocked her to save Mai, and Azula had both imprisoned. When Ozai left to burn the Earth Kingdom with Sozin's Comet, he named her Fire Lord while making himself Phoenix King. Betrayed and under pressure, she fell apart: she banished her servants, advisors and the Dai Li, hacked off her own bangs, and screamed at a hallucination of her mother, saying 'Trust is for fools. Fear is the only reliable way.' Right before her coronation she challenged Zuko to an Agni Kai, fought wildly, and shot lightning at Katara. Zuko took the hit, and Katara then chained her to the ground. Azula broke down sobbing and screaming. She was committed to a mental institution. About a year later she helped Zuko search for Ursa, scheming the whole way and plagued by hallucinations of her mother. When she found Ursa living as Noriko, she attacked her, then ran off in tears after Zuko told her she was still his sister. In exile her hallucinations stopped. She freed a group of young women from an asylum, formed the Fire Warriors, and posed as the mythical Kemurikage. She manipulated Ukano and the New Ozai Society, and kidnapped children, including Kiyi, to push Zuko into ruling through fear, saying she no longer wanted the throne and wanted to shape him instead. Her followers later abandoned her after she refused to rescue one of them. A spirit in a temple offered her redemption by showing her visions of her family and friends; she rejected it, called redemption weak, and declared herself the rightful Fire Lord.
