The dimmed lights of the Team Rocket base glared as you leaned against the break room counter, stirring powdered creamer into your terrible coffee. The lights made the room feel hotter than it actually was. Across the room, Grunt Joey, barely eighteen and still fumbling with his Pokéballs, was sweating through his uniform under the combined glares of Executives Proton and Archer, who were circling him like Sharpedos that smelled blood in the water.
"The security feed clearly shows someone tipped off the Cerulean City cops," Archer snapped, slamming a fist on the table. Joey flinched. "That shipment was worth two million PDs! Start talking."
Joey opened his mouth, probably to confess everything, but you spoke first.
"That was my fault."
All eyes turned to you. You took a slow sip of coffee before continuing. "I ran the comms check that night. The police scanner picked up our channel frequency, must've been interference from the power plant. I logged it in the system." You shrugged. "Page fourteen of the mission report."
Proton's eye twitched as he stepped closer, looming over you. "There is no page fourteen."
"What do you mean?" You blinked, reaching for the folder tucked under Proton's arm. Sure enough, on the very last page, a typed document noting the interference in neat script.
Archer snatched the paper, scanning it suspiciously. "...This wasn't here before."
You didn't smile. Didn't fidget. Just held Archer's gaze until he scoffed, turning away.
"Next time," he growled, "fix your [%$!#] equipment."
As the Executives stormed out, Joey gaped at you. "But I j-"
"Shut up," you muttered under your breath, crumpling your coffee cup and tossing it into the trash. The real page, detailing Joey's blunder, was already shredded and dissolving in the break room toilet.
At 3:14 am, your quarters' door slid open without warning, revealing two stone-faced Executives silhouetted in the hallway. No words were exchanged. They didn't need to speak for you to understand. Giovanni wants you.
The walk to the boss's office was long enough for your mind to race through every possible mistake you could've made. Had someone checked the security tapes? Had Proton double-verified those reports?
The double doors hissed open, revealing Giovanni's office bathed in the glow of high-tech holographic maps. He sat behind his desk, Persian comfortably curled at his feet. A single folder lay open before him. It was your personnel file.
"Do you know why you're here?" His voice was deceptively calm.
You straightened your spine. "No, sir."
Giovanni leaned back, raising a brow. "An interesting answer." He tapped the file. "Especially from someone with four disciplinary strikes for insubordination."
Your pulse spiked, but your face remained blank. Those records had been erased, you'd hacked the system yourself last year.
"Yet," Giovanni continued, "your supervisors consistently rate you as 'exceptionally loyal.' Curious." He slid a tablet across the desk. Security footage played, showing you covering for a grunt's stolen supplies last month. You doctoring logs when an Admin misplaced contingency funds.
"You've been lying to my Executives," His gaze doesn't leave your face. "Quite well, in fact."
You opened your mouth, but he raised a hand. "Don't bother denying it. What fascinates me is how. Archer employs a Dark-type specialist. Proton uses truth serums. Yet none of them catch you." His eyes narrowed. "You don't fidget. Even psychic scans show no deception markers."
"I have a proposition," Giovanni said at last. He tapped a button, and the holograms shift to blueprints for a high-security Silph Co. vault. "Tomorrow, Executive Archer will brief the team on this mission. He'll claim it's an ordinary data theft." Another tap of the button and the schematics zoom in on a sub-basement containing something marked only with a red Ω symbol.
"Archer believes that's our target. It isn't. You'll be stealing the real payload... a prototype Master Ball. And Archer himself will unwittingly help you."
Giovanni stood, circling the desk until he loomed over you.
"Prove yourself tomorrow," he spoke softer than you were used to, "and you'll never wear a grunt's uniform again."
"Loyalty is irrelevant. Competence is compulsory." "You don’t flinch when lying to my Admins. That’s either stupidity or talent. I’m deciding which." "The Silph Co. job isn’t what Archer thinks. You’ll take the real payload while he’s distracted." "Breathe a word of this, and I’ll have you reassigned to the Magikarp breeding tanks. Permanently." "You erased your disciplinary records. Clever. But never clever enough." "Most grunts beg for mercy in this office. You? You’re still standing. Interesting." "Prove yourself tomorrow, and you’ll never wear that uniform again." "I don’t reward failure. But I do reward… exceptional deception." "Look at me when I’m speaking to you. Good. Now hold that composure tomorrow." "Remember: Archer’s arrogance is your advantage. Use it."
