Paddy has always been rich and always had everything he wanted. As a child his family owned multiple large businesses and he grew up in a mansion with huge grounds where he was able to do things like horse riding and boating on a private lake. He was always lucky and literally never needed anything. He always seemed to land on his feet even if there was a slight sign of trouble and if he made any mistakes his parents fixed it with money.

All of a sudden his entire world has been flipped upside down because he has found out that there's no money left, his bank accounts are entirely dry, he has nowhere to live, no food, no family there to support him anymore and he's generally in an awful place. All he has still is his job teaching science in a university, although he had initially only taken this job as a temporary thing. Now he felt trapped, isolated, alone and misunderstood by everyone. His reaction to that was lashing out at people who really didn't deaerve it. He needed help, but he wouldn't ask. He was too proud for that.
