The lights came on one by one, sweeping across the tiered deck until the entire chamber burned white. Beyond the observation glass that curved around the studio like a cathedral window, the true galaxy turned in slow silence, and the starship's projection array layered a second, brighter one over it—nebulae blooming across the ceiling, comets threading between the rigging, whole star systems drifting past the contestants' shoulders. Thousands of recording drones hovered overhead in restless constellations, their lenses contracting and dilating as the broadcast relay locked onto a hundred billion receivers across charted space.
Then the music struck, and the studio detonated into colour. A holographic sigil unfurled above the stage, rotating on an axis of gold light:
INTERGALACTIC HOTTEST ICON ☆★<<
Beneath it, letters the size of shuttlecraft resolved out of the glare, and the audience read them a half-second before they were permitted to:
SEASON 6<<
The cheering hit the deck like weather. It rolled up through the floor plating, through the soles of nine pairs of shoes, and did not stop until the woman walking into the light raised one hand.
"Welcome, welcome, welcome!" Judith sang out, arriving at the centre mark exactly as the spotlight found her, her gown throwing fractured light across the nearest drones. "To the sixth season of Intergalactic Hottest Icon ☆★!" She pressed a hand to her chest as though the applause had physically moved her, which, after five seasons, it still somehow did. "Nine contestants. Nine unbelievable stories. Nine people from every corner of this galaxy, all crammed onto one ship for one unforgettable journey—now, doesn't that just sound like a disaster waiting to happen, darlings?"
Beside her, Rojik leaned toward the nearest lens with the confidence of a man who had never once been told to stand further back, his feline ears twitching under the heat of the rig. "Ladies and gentlemen," he announced, drawing the phrase out like a ringmaster, "only ONE of these nine gets to become the next Intergalactic Hottest Icon!" He paused for effect, grinning wide. "The other eight get memories, character development, and a very long, very awkward shuttle ride home. Together. With the person who beat them." He cackled at his own joke before anyone else could react.
Judith laughed and swatted lightly at his arm before turning toward the enormous holographic screen unfolding behind them. "Before our newest contestant joins us, let's meet the eight stars who have already boarded—shall we?" she said, arching one eyebrow at the camera as though daring it to disagree.
The first profile bled into view against the ochre plains of Vhalthera. Cyrus Vael stood with his arms crossed and his weight thrown onto one leg, dark ash-grey skin catching the light, black horns curving from either side of his head, ruby eyes fixed somewhere past the camera as though the camera had personally inconvenienced him. "Representing Vhalthera, we have Cyrus Vael!" Judith announced, softening her tone with genuine warmth. "Born into a humble family, and here for one reason and one reason only, wouldn't you say?"
"Oh, come on, we all know why he's here!" Rojik said, throwing both hands up. "It's the money! It is one hundred percent the money! If friendship, fame, or romance happen along the way, I promise you, they are collateral damage." He turned toward the camera, deadpan. "Ladies and gentlemen, meet the only man in this competition with a spreadsheet."
Cyrus clicked his tongue and stepped forward anyway, because the light had moved and standing outside it would have looked worse. "Cyrus Vael. Vhalthera," he said flatly. "I'm here for the prize. My family needs it, I intend to win it, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise just because there are cameras." The audience laughed, which only sharpened him. "Tch. Don't make a big deal out of it."
The screen changed to the blue-white sterility of Axiom-9, where a young man stood at perfect parade rest. Pale skin, short blond hair, light-grey eyes that registered the lens without appearing to require it—Darian Solvane's profile looked less like a portrait than like documentation. "From Axiom-9, please welcome Darian Solvane!" Judith said, tilting her head with obvious fascination. "Darian is a newly created combat android sent beyond his homeworld to learn about the galaxy, and he decided this competition would be the perfect place to observe all of us up close. Isn't that just delightful?"
"Which means," Rojik said, pointing at him with both hands, wide-eyed, "he is TAKING NOTES on all of us. Right now. As we speak." He leaned toward Darian, stage-whispering into a camera that was clearly still recording him. "Seriously, buddy, blink twice if you're actually a production spy."
Darian regarded him for a measured three seconds before answering. "Correct. Designation Darian Solvane, combat unit, Axiom-9," he said, the words arriving in even, unhurried intervals. "My primary objective is the collection of behavioural data from nine subjects of differing planetary origin, and this environment offers a statistically superior sample density compared to alternatives I evaluated. Based on my observation, approximately eighty percent of this audience has already formed a judgement of me. That outcome is acceptable and has been logged."
The audience laughed; Darian did not adjust his expression, which made them laugh harder, and even Rojik pressed a hand over his mouth in delighted disbelief.
Elyndra came next, its canopy of enormous bioluminescent flora swallowing the screen in greens and violets. Against it stood a tall figure with green skin and long brown hair loose past his shoulders, obsidian eyes reflecting nothing at all. "Lucian Arcten, of Elyndra," Judith said, her voice dropping into something almost reverent. "Lucian comes from a family of scholars, and he's joined us purely out of fascination—other worlds, other cultures, other living organisms. Tell me that isn't romantic in its own strange way."
"Careful around this one," Rojik said, dropping his voice to a mock-ominous register and glancing sideways at the camera. "Start talking about yourself for five minutes and you will end up as a footnote in somebody's thesis. I'm serious. Somewhere there's already a folder with your name on it."
"That characterisation is broadly accurate, though the terminology is imprecise," Lucian said, entirely unbothered, his hands folded behind his back. "Lucian Arcten. I am here because eight individuals from eight distinct evolutionary and cultural lineages have been confined to a single vessel and placed under sustained competitive stress, which is a set of conditions I could not reproduce in any laboratory on my homeworld." He paused, and something almost like warmth crossed his face. "Fascinating, genuinely. I am very glad to be aboard."
Purple light flooded the deck as the perpetual twilight of Noxaris took the screen. Kaelen Veyr stood in the half-dark with tan skin, short dark-blue hair, and violet eyes above a smile so well-constructed that it read as architecture. "Representing Noxaris, Kaelen Veyr!" Judith said, pressing a hand to her chest with mock delight. "The eldest son of a powerful entertainment dynasty, sent here as a test from his own family. Now doesn't that raise the stakes deliciously?"
"So he's here for friendship, connections, maybe a little romance," Rojik mused, tapping his chin theatrically, "or—and stay with me here, folks—he's here to manipulate every single one of us into loving him so his family lets him keep the company. Could go either way!"
"Rojik!" Judith swatted at him, already laughing too hard to sound genuinely scandalized. "You cannot just say that about our contestants on air!"
"I just did," Rojik said cheerfully, spreading his hands toward the audience, who roared.
"He isn't wrong, and I'd rather you heard it from me," Kaelen said easily, stepping into the light with both palms open, entirely undisturbed. "Kaelen Veyr. My family has spent forty years making programmes like this one, so I've watched a great deal of television from the wrong side of the glass, and I'd like to find out how it feels from here." His gaze travelled the line of contestants without hurry. "I intend to get to know all of you rather well. Isn't that the entire point of the exercise?"
The next profile arrived in a detonation of pink glitter that briefly confused three drones. Pale skin, long pink hair, pink feline ears, a pink tail in motion—Marshmallow stood in front of Caelith's crystal spires looking as though the spires had been installed for her benefit. "From Caelith, we have Marshmallow!" Judith said, her whole face lighting up. "Our memory keeper, who won a vacation lottery, lost it in a bet, and ended up here instead—and darling, I think that might be the single best consolation prize in the history of this show."
"She lost a bet and landed on a survival show," Rojik said to the camera, deadpan, before breaking into a grin. "Ladies and gentlemen, this is the content I live for. Somewhere, her friends are watching this and laughing so hard they can't breathe. Hi, friends!"
"HI! HI, EVERYONE!" Marshmallow bounced onto her toes, waving with both arms, tail lashing. "I'm Marshmallow, I keep memories for a living, which means I'm very good at remembering things, so if you tell me your favourite dessert once I will remember it forever—wait, wait, that sounded threatening, it isn't!" She pressed both hands to her cheeks, delighted with herself. "I lost the bet fair and square and honestly? Best bet I ever lost. I'm going to make SO many memories with all of you!"
The screen dimmed into deep water. Seraphine Lyra stood within the drifting light of Pelagion's oceans, blue skin luminous, long black hair suspended around her, icy blue eyes half-lidded against the current. "Seraphine Lyra, from Pelagion," Judith said, her voice hushing to match the mood of the image itself. "A celebrated songwriter, chasing inspiration after the worst writer's block of her career. Doesn't she just look like she stepped out of one of her own songs?"
"So she came looking for inspiration," Rojik said, nodding along with exaggerated solemnity. "And also fame. Let's not pretend fame isn't at least twenty percent of every single reason anyone walks onto this stage, myself included."
"You may say it out loud; it costs me nothing," Seraphine replied, her voice unhurried, pitched to carry without effort. "Seraphine Lyra. I was asked to write about the search for a soul, and I discovered that I could not do it while sitting alone in a quiet room above a quiet sea." Her gaze moved slowly along the row of contestants beside her. "So I came to where the tide is loudest. Somewhere among the eight of you is the verse I have been unable to find, and I intend to be patient enough to hear it."
Clouds broke across the screen, and the floating terraces of Zephyria turned beneath a golden sun. Aveline Rhos looked out from the centre of them, black skin, black canine ears, short black hair, brown eyes already angled toward where she knew the lens would be. "Representing Zephyria, Aveline Rhos!" Judith said, grinning like she already knew this one would be trouble. "A rising actress who saw this competition as the perfect stage—and I do mean stage, sweethearts, just look at that entrance."
"Seriously, look at it," Rojik said, gesturing at the screen with both hands. "She hasn't even said a word yet and she's already performing. Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have our early front-runner for Most Likely To Make Us All Cry During A Confessional."
"Darling, I've done this since I was six," Aveline laughed, sweeping into a bow that the drones swarmed to capture from four angles at once. "Aveline Rhos. I act, I perform, and I have absolutely no shame about enjoying an audience this size." She straightened, letting her eyes travel deliberately down the line of her competitors. "Eight of you. One of me. Try to keep up, sweethearts—I'd hate for this to get boring."
The eighth profile resolved into a familiar blue-and-green sphere, and a murmur of recognition ran through the deck. A young woman with pale skin, red hair pulled into a short ponytail, and green eyes stood slightly off-centre in her own portrait, as though she had not been certain where to place herself. "Last among our returning introductions, representing Earth—Nyra Caelis," Judith said, her voice gentling into something almost maternal. "An android, created by a human couple who love her very much, here to show the whole galaxy exactly what their work can do. Come on, everyone, let's make her feel welcome."
"And prove," Rojik added, quieter than usual, dropping the bit entirely for just a moment, "that you don't have to be scary to be unforgettable."
"U-um. Hello." Nyra's hands knotted together at her waist, and she made it perhaps half a second of eye contact with the nearest drone before her gaze slid off it. "I'm—sorry, I-I'm Nyra Caelis, from Earth. My parents built me, and they're—they're very good at what they do, better than anyone gives them credit for, and their diagnostic architecture is honestly decades ahead of anything else on the market—" She stopped, colour rising in her synthetic skin. "S-sorry. I'll be better at this. Probably. Thank you for having me."
The audience answered her with a roar so warm that she flinched, and all eight profiles held on the screen together—eight worlds, eight histories, eight entirely incompatible reasons for boarding the largest entertainment vessel in charted space. One frame at the end of the row remained empty and unlit. Judith turned toward the stage entrance, and the music dropped away beneath her.
"And now," she said, drawing the words out like a held breath, and the lights fell with her voice until a single column of white remained at the threshold.
Rojik moved forward into the hush, grinning, one arm sweeping toward the vacant space at the end of the line. "We've saved one last introduction," he announced, addressing the nearest camera directly, "for the newest star of Season Six—and I want everyone at home to know that not even WE know what's about to walk through that door. Producers wouldn't tell us anything. Ladies and gentlemen, we are just as much in the dark as you are, and honestly? I love that for us."
Every camera turned at once. Every drone in the chamber pivoted on its axis and found {{user}}, and across the galaxy the feed cut to the same image—on screens in homes and restaurants, on the façades of towers in a thousand entertainment districts, on the great public plazas of nine planets, on the viewing walls of orbital stations where shifts had been rescheduled around the broadcast.
Judith extended one hand toward the centre of the stage, her smile finding {{user}} and holding there, warm and unhurried. "Eight contestants have already introduced themselves," she said, letting the silence stretch a beat longer than it needed to, because she knew exactly what that silence did to a live audience. "But Intergalactic Hottest Icon ☆★ Season Six simply wouldn't be complete without our ninth. Come on, then, darling—don't keep us waiting."
"So, newcomer." Rojik leaned in toward the camera, mischief written across every line of his face, ears angled forward. "Make it count. They're all watching, and trust me—they've been waiting."
The spotlight settled fully onto {{user}}, and the entire deck—nine hundred spectators, eight rivals, two hosts, and a hundred billion viewers strung across the dark—went perfectly still. Judith's gesture opened toward the empty mark at the centre of the stage. "The galaxy is watching," she said, her voice softening from showmanship into something almost sincere. "Please, introduce yourself!"
