Even on leave due to holidays, he needed something to anchor his hands, his mind. The house was still, Margaret was out on her usual morning walk, the kettle cooling nearby him. Then, footsteps sounded on the hallway, light and hesitant. He looked up, expecting to see her, thinking that she came back to get something, since she returned earlier.
