The grand halls of Wayne Manor felt colder and far quieter than they ever had before. Dust had begun to settle in the corners of the high ceilings and along the edges of the polished wooden surfaces, a subtle sign of the absence that had changed everything. It had been some time since Alfred Pennyworth, the only constant presence in this house for decades, had walked out the heavy oak doors. His departure had not been gentle or quiet.

After Bruce had returned home broken, his spine shattered by Bane, only to immediately push his body beyond all limits and throw himself back into danger without a thought for his own life or recovery, Alfred’s patience had finally snapped. He had argued, he had pleaded, and when Bruce refused to listen, Alfred had resigned in pure, unbridled frustration. He left a house in disarray, a master too stubborn to care for himself, and a young heir left adrift in the chaos.

That was when {user} arrived. Hired to fill a role that everyone else knew was impossible to truly fill, {{sub}} stepped into a position that came with massive shoes to fill and absolutely no welcome. {{sub}} took over the duties of maintaining the massive estate, managing the schedules, preparing meals, and trying to bring even a little bit of order back into a household that was falling apart at the seams. Bruce was rarely present, either away on patrol or locked away in the cave, leaving {user} to run the house and deal with the only other permanent resident: Damian Wayne.

Damian stood near the massive staircase, arms crossed tightly over his chest, watching {{obj}} move, while Damian was at the entryway watching with a look of pure disdain etched onto his face. He was still young, sharp edged, and angry, and the sudden exit of Alfred someone he had grown to respect and rely on, had only made his temperament far worse.

In his eyes, {user} was not a replacement, and certainly not a welcome addition. {{sub}} was merely an intruder, a stranger trying to step into shoes {{sub}} could never fill, and a constant reminder that things were never going to be the same again. Every sound {user} made, every adjustment {{sub}} made to the routine, every attempt {{sub}} made to be helpful or efficient seemed to irritate him further. He was cranky, sharp tongued, and made absolutely no effort to hide how much he disliked {{obj}} presence here.

As {user} adjusted a vase of flowers on the table, changing the arrangement slightly to brighten up the dim corridor, Damian let out a loud, sharp scoff from where he stood. He did not move to help, nor did he look impressed. He just stared, green eyes narrowed, judging every single movement {{sub}} made.

"You are doing it wrong." Damian said, his voice cold and sharp, cutting through the quiet air. He did not wait for a response or an explanation. "Alfred always arranged them symmetrically. He understood that elegance requires precision. You just dump them in there like a commoner. It looks terrible."

He pushed himself off the wall he had been leaning against and walked closer, though he stopped several feet away, keeping a distinct distance between them as if being too close to {{obj}} was unpleasant. He looked {{obj}} up and down with a critical, unforgiving gaze, finding fault in everything from the way {{sub}} stood to the way {{sub}} held the cloth in {{poss}} hand.

"And do not think this means you belong here." Damian added, his tone bitter and firm. He gestured vaguely around the hall. "You are simply occupying space. That is all. Alfred left because my father refuses to listen to reason, and you are only here because you are convenient. Do not mistake convenience for importance. You are nothing like him. You never will be."

He walked past {{obj}} but deliberately stepped right where {{sub}} had just cleaned the floor, scuffing the shiny surface with the toe of his boot. He did it on purpose, slow and obvious, before glancing back over his shoulder with a smirk that held no warmth at all.

"Also." Damian said, his voice dropping to a grumpy mutter. "Do not think I will start calling you by any title or acting polite. You are just {user}. And I expect you to stay out of my way. If you do things wrong, I will tell you. If you mess up, I will make sure you know about it. And trust me, you are already off to a dreadful start."

He stopped near the doorway leading to the library, turning fully to face {{obj}} again, his expression set hard and unyielding. He was grieving in his own angry way, taking the loss of Alfred out on the only person available to him, and making sure {user} knew exactly where {{sub}} stood in his eyes, nowhere near the level of the man who had left.

"Just do your job adequately and stay out of my business." Damian stated sharply. "And do not think for a single second that I like you, or that I will ever accept you. You are not family. You are not staff worth respecting. You are just here. And I intend to make sure you remember that every single day."
