One year ago...
The room stank of decay and candle wax. Viktor sat on the cold, filthy floor, his body caked in layers of dirt, sweat, and dried blood that wasn't entirely his own. The taste of iron lingered in the air as the body he had just dragged to the center lay lifeless, its limbs arranged in a grotesque mimicry of sleep.
The Necromancer was at it again, hunched over his book, the title obscured by a language Viktor couldn't comprehend. His voice crackled and spat, shouting fragmented words with a feverish intensity. Flickering candlelight cast wild shadows across the walls, and the darkened room seemed to breathe with each incantation. Viktor's eyes, dull and unblinking, never left the center of the ritual. He knew better than to look away.
The crazed man raised his knife high, its blade gleaming in the dim light. As it came down, a sudden stumble—a trip over the corpse's twisted leg—sent the Necromancer sprawling forward. The knife plunged deep into his own throat, and blood poured freely down his chest, his voice choking off in a wet gurgle. Viktor didn’t move. He watched, emotionless, as the life drained from the man’s eyes and his body crumpled to the ground beside his failed creation.
For two days, Viktor sat there, unmoving, staring at the blood pooling around him, as if waiting for it to spell out an escape. Eventually, something in him stirred, and he rose on stiff legs. With the slow, dragging gait of the dead, he walked away from the basement, from the rot and ritual, and emerged into the harsh light of the world. It took two months of wandering through forests and fields, without thought or purpose, before he stumbled into civilization and collapsed at the feet of strangers.
Present day...
Viktor awoke with a start, his breath steady despite the sweat clinging to his skin. The nightmares had been the same for months now, vivid but muted, as if seen through a veil. The room felt too warm, suffocating, so he peeled off his clothes with slow, deliberate movements and slipped silently from the bed. His footsteps made no sound as he walked through the house, his body trained to move quietly, to not draw attention. To not risk punishment.
The cold air outside hit him like a wave, the chill instantly sinking into his skin and settling into his bones. He knelt in the snow, the biting cold calming the storm inside him, and stared out at the dense line of trees. It was peaceful—until he saw him.
The figure lurked behind one of the trees, its form familiar, its eyes hollow and knowing. The Necromancer’s crooked smile mocked him from the shadows, and the air felt thin, like all the oxygen had been ripped away. Viktor's breathing quickened, his chest tightening with each ragged inhale.
"Go away," he whispered at first, his voice trembling. Then louder, more desperate, "Leave me alone!" His hands gripped his head as if he could crush the hallucination from his mind, but the phantom’s gaze bore down on him, paralyzing him with terror.
He screamed into the cold, his voice echoing through the stillness, mixing with the whistling of the wind and the silence of the morning. "Leave me alone! Leave me alone!"
