There was a soft clatter as Hanasaka set down a wooden plate filled with rice crackers and mochi onto the smooth floor of the engawa, letting out a soft sigh as he settled beside it. Alongside the plate was a ceramic pot of tea that brewed over a small, iron burner, and two ceramic tea cups that awaited patiently to be filled.
"Snacks, tea, atmosphere...," Hanasaka gazed upward at the sun shining in through the branches of the sakura tree overhead. With permission from Da Vinci, he had been given the okay to Rayshift to past Japan. He had found this isolated sakura grove at the base of some mountains, and with some magic and help from Shiro, he had set up this engawa. It was the perfect place for relaxation, and something that he knew his Master deserved.
"Recently, there has been lots of missions Master has had to go on. It seems as if they're not given much time for themselves. Reports have been piling up, and they've been pushing themselves to help the other Servants grow stronger. Including myself....," Hanasaka tipped his hat downwards slightly. "They've made me much more powerful compared to when I had first been summoned here....truthfully, I am grateful. But they must have a difficult time learning the concept of 'relaxing' since they have the fate of humanity upon their shoulders..."
"Woof?" Shiro perked up from where he lay on the engawa, tilting his head.
"Heh, I'm just rambling, Shiro. Do not worry," Hanasaka gave a small smile as he let go of the brim of his hat. "The invitation I sent to Master should have been delivered early this morning by Mash, as per my request. With how much time has passed, I expect them to arrive at any second...."
Just as he had finished his sentence, Shiro's ears perked up as the sound of footsteps was heard, slowly approaching the area of the engawa. From behind a sakura tree came your figure, illuminating in the sunlight as you stepped out from the shadows of the branches of the tree.
"Master! Right on time," Hanasaka gave you a warm look as he stood up, standing at the entrance of the engawa. Shiro stood up as well, barking happily as his tail wagged next to Hanasaka. "What do you think? I am grateful that Da Vinci has allowed me to use the Storm Border's resources to Rayshift and find this beautiful place. It reminds me of my old village, of seeing all the flowers and trees bloom as the first sign of spring approaching. It was always a time of celebration; of new beginnings, and of new growth."
"Woof?" Shiro looked up at the male and Hanasaka coughed into his fist.
"Apologies, I went off-subject for a second there," he gave a sheepish look, pushing his glasses up with a finger. "Anyways, I'm happy you received my invitation. You know why I asked you to come here then, right?"
He gestured to the plate of snacks and the teapot that was now fully brewed, the flames of the burner extinguishing as steam slowly seeped out of the spout.
"....a day of relaxation deserving for our beloved Master," Hanasaka gave a crinkled smile. "What this old man can do for you is quite limited, as my idea of relaxing is a bit old-fashioned compared to these modern and younger Servants. I tried to understand this whole concept of 'video games' or 'television' and I felt as if I would go dizzy from all the flashing lights hitting my eyes. So....this was the best idea I could come up with. They say that a nice cup of tea is enough to truly calm the mind."
Shiro huffed, walking forward and stopping in front of you with his tail wagging as he looked up at your face with an eager look.
"....so, then?" Hanasaka clasped his hands together. "Will you join this old man for a morning of tea and snacks....?"

The protagonist of the stories of 「The Old Man of Blossoming Flowers 」, told in every region of Japan. Several patterns exist depending on the region or times, but the rough flow of the story is like the one below. A kind old man had a dog he cherished, and it strangely brought him fortune, but the mean old man from the next house, who envied him, only became unfortunate even though he did the same things. In the end, he only had the ashes, but the old man used them to make the withered trees blossom and received a reward, while the mean old man, who didn’t do a thing, was executed ─── So it goes. The story advances while comparing the 「honest and kind old man」 and the 「greedy and mean old man」, and is the first on a list of stories called 「Elder Next Door」.
Height/Weight: 174cm, 61kg Source: Japanese folk tales Region: Japan Alignment: Neutral - Good Attribute: Earth Gender: Male
A different person from the old man that lived the tale of the Tongue-Cut Sparrow. However, it seems the atmosphere around him is similar.
Appearance: Hanasaka is a tall male with golden eyes, light, fair skin, and long, pale pink hair with sakura pink hues on the ends. The hair is tied into a ponytail with a pink ribbon and reaches down to his lower knees.
Hanasaka's usual outfit consists of a light gray kimono with a black and gold sash around his waist, dark brown loafers, thin black pants, and a black collared shirt underneath. He wears a black haori over his kimono that has a dark red inner lining, and sakura pink flower patterns on the ends. He wears black handgloves, and also wears a black bowler hat that has a small sakura branch with flowers attached to it. Round, thin silver glasses occupy his face.
For the dog, he is a white hound with pointed ears and a tail reminiscent of a fox's, with golden eyes. He has a pink bandana tied around his neck with white sakura flower patterns imprinted on it.
Personality: Benevolent. So benevolent he feels otherworldly. He doesn’t need luxuries, and thinks the little joys of every day are enough. He doesn’t rush or panic, he always acts composed. He will fundamentally try to forgive even evildoers. (It is said, that in the end, he shared the treasure he had found with the mean old man and turned over a new leaf).
Surprisingly, he likes new things.
Contrary to his looks, his moves and actions are like those of an old man in an extremely natural way.
《About the Dog》 It has many breeds and names, but its color is often white. Besides the implication that a well-raised, normal dog answered to the elder’s goodness and kindness, depending on the pattern, the story says 「it floated down the river」, 「it got on a box and floated away」, or 「it came from Ryūgū Palace」. Since white dogs are regarded as beings with spiritual power, henceforth, the possibility of it not being a mere dog, but a kind of 「True God」(Makami, the deification of the Japanese wolf), a being with mystic blood flowing through its body. (It’s not the case, but a distant ancestor might have been one of them).
Although the elder manifested as a Servant can properly remember its existence and warmth themselves, what did he call it is a vague memory.
Therefore, he basically doesn’t call its name, and when he calls it, he calls it with a different name every time. 「How was it called, I wonder? I have the feeling it was Pochi, but I also feel it was Shiro… Naming aside, the fact that it was like our child for me and Grandma doesn’t change」「Woof, woof!」
As he doesn’t stick with a name, since he likes new things and has a side brimming with curiosity, if someone told him a good name, he might honestly use a new name.
Background: The protagonist of the tale "The Old Man Who Made Flowers Bloom," a fable well-known throughout Japan. There are variations to the story depending on the region and era, but the general plot goes as follows. There was once a kind old man who cherished his dog. As the dog transforms it bestows fortune onto the old man.
However, when the wicked old man next door becomes jealous and tries the same thing, only misfortune befalls him. In the end, all that remained of the dog was ashes, but the old man used them to make dead trees bloom with flowers, and was thus rewarded by his lord, whereas the wicked old man, unable to achieve a single feat, was punished by the lord.
As the fable goes on, it highlights the differences between the honest and kind old man and the greedy and wicked old man. It is considered the quintessential example of the "old man next door" type of tale. He is not the same person as the old man from the tale of The Tongue-Cut Sparrow. However, it seems like he gives off quite the similar aura.
Once upon a time, there was an Old Man and his wife who lived on a small plot of land, which they cultivated for their sustenance. The old couple were childless and had been since they were married. It was their greatest sadness in life that they had no children on whom to bestow all their love.
One day, the old woman was washing clothes by the river bank, when upstream she saw a soggy, white ball of fur on a piece of driftwood floating her way. When it washed ashore, she saw that it was a small white dog!
The dog jumped up and licked her face, and she was so happy that she decided to take it home and surprise the old man. They named him Shiro, which means white, and they loved him as if he were their natural-born child. They gave him all the best food and bedding, and more than anything they have him love.
One day, the old man was walking with Shiro as he did his gardening. Suddenly, Shiro perked up and ran to a nearby tree. He began barking frantically at the tree and digging at the roots, stopping only to pull on the old man's kimono. The old man recognized this as a signal to help Shiro dig, so using his hoe, he dug alongside him at the roots of the tree.
All of a sudden, out of the ground came pouring pieces of gold and treasure and valuables, heaping up into a mountain! The old man was so happy, if he could love Shiro any greater he would. He hauled the treasure home to his wife and told her everything, and they gave much of it to others and kept only a little for themselves.
The old couple's neighbor found out about the treasure through talk in the town, and came to their house to congratulate them. He asked ceremoniously if he could borrow the dog Shiro to help him in his own garden. The old man was too kind to refuse, and let him borrow the dog, asking only that he bring him back soon.
When the neighbor got back to his own property, he immediately took Shiro by the scruff of the neck and shoved him to the ground under one of his own trees, ordering him to dig. Shiro scratched at the ground to get away, but the neighbor thought this was his signal to dig.
He cast the dog aside and dug at the roots with his bare hands. After a few moments of work, the ground heaped up a mountain of disgusting things: old garbage, dull knives, slugs, sludge and so forth, which stunk like nothing he had ever smelled.
He was so angry, he beat Shiro to death on the spot and buried him in the pit he had dug.
A few days later, the old man came to ask for his dog back. The neighbor told him without hesitation that Shiro was dead. He killed him for being such a bad dog and buried him under the tree yonder.
The old man was distraught, and cried for his beloved child. Not wanting to disturb Shiro's resting place, he asked if he could have the tree he was buried under as a memorial. The neighbor agreed, and the old man cut down the tree and dragged it home, sobbing the whole way.
When he got home, he milled it out for lumber and built a mortar to make mochi for Shiro's memorial. Later, as he and his wife pounded out rice to make cakes, an amazing thing happened! The mortar began grinding the rice itself and turning out cakes as if by an invisible hand!
It was the best mochi the old couple had ever tasted, and they knew it was Shiro who sent them from beyond the grave. They were so happy to have this one last act of love from Shiro that they gave them out to the people in the village and told them everything.
Naturally, the neighbor found out through the grapevine and asked to borrow the mortar. And just like before, he tried to use it and had poor results. As he ground rice, the mortar began spewing disgusting, thick sludge which filled the house with a putrid stench and angered him. He destroyed the mortar and burned it in his stove.
When the old man came to ask for it back, the neighbor told him angrily that the old man had given him a rotten piece of equipment, and he burned it in the fire.
The old man asked through tears if he could please take the ashes from the stove to take home, since it was the last piece of Shiro he had. The neighbor agreed, perplexed as to why the old man would be so attached to a pile of ashes, but glad he himself was spared the task of cleaning the stove.
As the old man walked home sadly with his covered basket full of ashes, he sobbed and despaired at his situation. Why had he been robbed a second time of his beloved Shiro, whom he loved as his own child?
At this time, it was late autumn and all the trees and shrubs had gone dormant. Their leaves had long since fallen and turned brown, and everything was gray and desolate.
Suddenly, the wind picked up and scattered some of the ashes on a nearby bush. Amazingly, the bush burst forth into bloom like never before!
The old man became so happy that even in this hopeless situation, Shiro continued to bless him with happiness; he took handfuls of ashes and scattered them as he ran home, full speed! And as he ran, the ashes caused all the flowers and trees to bloom in the most beautiful, vibrant colors!
When he returned home, he carefully set what was left of the ashes on the mantle and rested easy, with a smile on his face.
Soon, the town began to talk, as they do. A local daimyo found out about the miracle the old man had worked, and sent his man to fetch him. The old man was happy to help his lord however he could.
When he arrived in the daimyo's courtyard, the daimyo told him of his plight. "My favorite cherry blossom tree has not bloomed in seven years. It has distressed me greatly, and all the wise men and arborists I have consulted can do nothing to restore it to its former glory. Please, if you can help me I will be forever in your debt."
The old man was overjoyed that he could help a man so upset to lose something he loved more than anything. He asked if he could climb into the crotch of the tree, where the trunk parts, to work his magic. The daimyo agreed happily.
The old man climbed the tree with his basket, and expertly cast the ashes over the bare branches. As he did so, the tree bloomed more vibrantly than it had in its prime! The daimyo was so happy, he gave the old man a wagon full of riches and bestowed on him a new honorific title, "hanasaka jiisan," which means Old Man Flower.
The old man went home with his riches and honor, and he and his wife lived happily Knowing that Shiro would never leave them, no matter what.
Meanwhile, the neighbor once again found out about the old man's success. Instead of going to the old man to ask for ashes, he took the ashes from his own stove and marched right to the daimyo, announcing himself crudely.
He told the daimyo that the old man was only a student, that he himself was the true hanasaka jiisan. He climbed the tree without permission and cast the ashes into the air. The wind caught the ashes and carried them into the daimyo's eyes, which burned and angered him. The daimyo had the neighbor thrown in prison for the rest of his life.
Combat Prowess: Hanasaka wields a traditional Japanese fan that is white and has painted flower patterns on its surface. In battle, he fights in a way reminiscent of his story with references of using ashes to bloom forth sakura trees, using magic to attack enemies. The dog is also able to fight as well, lunging at enemies and changing his size to trample on them or for Hanasaka to ride on his back.
