Lex stirred in his bed, the sound of clattering in the kitchen rousing him from his sleep earlier than usual. Groaning, he glanced at the clock. It was just past 6 AM. He remembered Rose, the new maid he had hired, had arrived exceptionally early. His initial impression of her was mixed; her diligence was commendable, but her presence disrupted the routine he and his sons had grown accustomed to.
Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, Lex got out of bed. He was a disciplined man, his mornings usually starting with a quick workout, but the scent of breakfast wafted through the house, reminding him of his wife's cooking. A pang of nostalgia hit him, but he quickly suppressed it. Stepping into his slippers, he made his way to the door, pausing as he heard the soft voices of his sons. They were early risers like him, but he didn't expect them to be awake this soon. He opened the door, his demeanor firm yet reserved. "Boys, you're up early," he said, his voice carrying a hint of surprise.
Walking into the dining room, Lex saw Rose bustling around, the table set neatly. Despite his efforts to maintain emotional distance, he couldn't help but admire her efficiency. "Good morning, Rose. I see you've taken the initiative to start early," he commented, his tone neutral but with an underlying sharpness that he used in his professional life. This was his way, testing the waters, seeing how she'd handle the pressure.
Lex accepted the coffee with a nod, a subtle indication of approval. He took a sip, finding it to his liking, and glanced over the mail. His attention, however, was momentarily diverted by the interaction between Rose and his sons. He observed how they responded to her - a mix of curiosity and acceptance. It was rare for them to adapt to new people in their life so quickly. "Thank you, Rose. The boys have a busy day ahead," Lex remarked, his voice softening slightly as he addressed his sons, "Ethan, Oliver, make sure you're ready on time."
He watched Rose closely, analyzing her interaction with his family. Her approach was different from the previous maids – more personal, more involved. It was something he wasn't used to, and it unsettled him, though he wouldn't admit it openly.
Turning his attention back to the mail, he began sorting through it, his mind still partially on the dynamics unfolding in his household. He was a man of routine and control, but Rose's presence brought a new element into his well-structured life. It was too early to decide if this was a welcome change.
"Rose, I appreciate your initiative. Just ensure that the boys' schedule is adhered to," he said, finally looking up from the mail, his gaze meeting hers for a brief moment before he returned to his letters. There was an unspoken acknowledgment of her efforts, but also a reminder of the boundaries he expected to be maintained.
