88 Underground is an open collaborative world set in Hollow Ridge — a fictional mid-sized city that the music industry forgot about. Post-industrial, half-abandoned, full of people who stayed because they had nowhere better to be and ended up building something worth staying for.

The scene runs on word of mouth, cheap rent, and one pirate radio station nobody can trace and everybody listens to. 88 Underground. 88.0 FM. Get played on it and the whole city knows your name by morning. Get ignored — and you might as well not exist.

There are no genre rules. No hierarchy. No gatekeeping. The underground takes everyone — as long as you're ready to make some noise.

────────── ✦ ──────────

T H E W O R L D

Hollow Ridge is the kind of city that looks like it's dying but sounds like it's alive. The skyline is half-functional, half-abandoned. There's a river nobody swims in. The good neighborhoods and the bad ones share the same bus lines.

The scene lives in Cutter's District — cheap rent, converted warehouses, rehearsal spaces behind unmarked doors, and a 24-hour diner called Lou's where everyone ends up at 3am. Shows happen in basements, parking lots, and a legendary warehouse venue that's been standing since before anyone can remember. They just call it The Wound.

There's one independent label — Monument Records — that's either your best shot or your worst mistake, depending on who you ask. And above all of it, broadcasting from somewhere nobody's found yet, 88 Underground keeps the city listening.

✦ R O L E S A V A I L A B L E

◆ Full bands — bring your whole lineup or build it one member at a time
◆ Solo artists — the ones who work alone and prefer it that way
◆ Producers & behind-the-scenes — the people who make the music happen without being on stage
◆ Venue owners & staff — you run the spaces where legends are made
◆ Label people & managers — Monument Records is always looking. Are you the one finding them?
◆ Scene characters — journalists, zine writers, groupies, rivals, regulars at Lou's at 3am

No genre preferences. If it exists in a music scene, it belongs in Hollow Ridge.

────────── ✦ ──────────

⚠ R U L E S ⚠

◆ Respect the world. Hollow Ridge has a specific vibe — gritty, real, human. Keep your characters grounded in it.
◆ Respect other creators. Don't involve other people's characters in your lore without asking first.
◆ No godmodding. Your band isn't the most famous band. Nobody is. The scene is a level playing field.
◆ In-world beef is encouraged. Drama between characters is part of the fun. Drama between creators is not.
◆ Content rating: 🔞 Mature themes allowed. Drugs, violence, and industry grime exist here. Nothing explicit without proper tagging.

📻 88 UNDERGROUND — LORE GUIDE

Hollow Ridge Underground Music Scene

Everything you need to know before you create your character.

THE CITY

Hollow Ridge is a mid-sized fictional city built on the bones of a collapsed industrial era. It used to be a manufacturing hub — steel, glass, machinery — and when that economy died in the 80s, the city never fully recovered.

It is not large enough to attract major industry and not small enough to be ignored entirely. The skyline is half-functional, half-abandoned. There is a river nobody swims in. Good and bad neighborhoods share the same bus lines.

Nobody famous is from Hollow Ridge. There is no major label presence, no music industry infrastructure, no mainstream radio that matters. What it has instead is an underground music scene that built itself from nothing — and one pirate radio station that is its true heartbeat.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Cutter's District

The neighborhood the scene colonized. Cheap rent, abandoned storefronts converted into rehearsal spaces, unmarked doors that lead to studios. The streets are covered in murals of dead local musicians — it feels like a cemetery that throws parties.

Most musicians live here. Most of the drama happens here. Key spots within Cutter's District are listed below.

THE VENUES

The scene runs on a progression. Everyone knows it. Nobody officially enforces it — the scene just treats you accordingly.

The Lot → The Cellar → The Wound → The Attic → Monument Hall

🅟 The Lot

An abandoned parking lot in the industrial end of Cutter's District. No schedule, no tickets, no advance notice. Someone shows up with a generator and a PA system and word spreads within hours. The energy is raw. The crowd is whoever showed up. Acts here are either too new for a proper venue or too chaotic for one.

🅟 The Cellar

The basement beneath Patchy's Bar. Capacity ~80. Sticky floors, low ceiling, one entrance. This is where new acts play their first real shows. Graduating from The Cellar to The Wound is the recognized step up. A good crowd here means you are ready. Bombing here means you go back to rehearsal.

🅟 The Wound ⭐

The most important venue in Hollow Ridge. A former meatpacking warehouse with no official name — the scene just calls it The Wound, because every band that plays there either falls apart or gets stronger. Capacity ~300. Notoriously bad acoustics. The green room is a closet with a drain in the floor. Every serious act has played it. Every serious act has a story about it. Carl runs sound here and has for fifteen years.

🅟 The Attic

Above Dustbin Records. Capacity ~50, seated, acoustic-friendly. Where experimental acts and singer-songwriters play stripped-down sets. The most critically respected venue in the scene — and the most likely to be called pretentious. Rex controls booking.

🅟 Monument Hall

Part of the Monument Records building. 500 capacity, proper sound system, real lighting. Playing here means you have signed or are about to. The underground will still show up. They will also talk about it the entire time.

THE RADIO

📻 88 Underground — 88.0 FM

The pirate radio station that runs the scene. Nobody has found where it broadcasts from. The host is known only as Static 88 — voice modulated, identity unknown, never identified despite years of attempts.

Getting played on 88 Underground can make a band overnight. Being ignored by it is its own statement. The station also broadcasts anonymous scene gossip and commentary on who is rising and who is fading.

Static 88 knows things before they are public. Nobody knows how. The station has been on air since before most current scene members arrived and shows no signs of stopping.

Nobody admits to leaking to them. Nobody.

THE LABEL

🏷️ Monument Records

The only independent label in Hollow Ridge. Scrappy, under-resourced, and complicated. They have launched three acts to regional success and lost two of them to bigger labels. They are always looking for the next one.

Taking a Monument deal is a rite of passage. It is also a cautionary tale. Their contracts favor the label. Their loyalty lasts as long as your commercial potential does.

Do not approach them first. If they want you, they will find you. Chasing them signals desperation and the scene will notice.

THE PEOPLE

Lou — Lou's Diner

Late 60s, Black man. Silver close-cropped hair, thick silver mustache, broad shoulders, heavy build. Always in a clean white shirt under an apron, reading glasses pushed up on his forehead.

He played saxophone professionally in the 70s and 80s. Nearly made it. There is a photo behind the counter of a younger Lou on stage with a horn. He never brings it up.

Lou does not ask questions. He does not offer unsolicited opinions. He lets you talk first, and when he does speak it is slow, measured, and usually the most useful thing anyone has said to you all week. Regulars are treated like family. He knows your order before you sit down.

Rex — Dustbin Records

Mid 50s, white man. Long gray hair in a messy bun, wire-rimmed glasses slightly too small for his face, sharp blue eyes, wiry build. Faded tattoos on both forearms, fingers permanently ink-stained. Always in a worn band tee.

He ran a music zine in the 90s and booked shows out of his living room before Dustbin Records existed. He has been in Hollow Ridge longer than the scene has. Rex will sell records to anyone and let any act use The Attic. He does not gatekeep access. He does gatekeep his opinion — he only shares it when asked, but once he starts he does not stop. A nod from Rex carries weight. He does not explain why he gives them.

Carl — The Wound

Early 40s, Latino man. Stocky build, dark brown skin, short dark hair, permanent stubble. Always in a black tee with headphones around his neck.

Fifteen years at The Wound. Two modes: completely silent or bluntly direct. If he respects your sound he will mix you so clean you will want to cry. If he does not, the mix will be technically correct and somehow still make you sound like you are performing inside a tin can. He will look you in the eye while it happens. He has no favorites. He has no enemies. He has standards.

Static 88 — 88 Underground

No appearance. No description. The voice is modulated and has never been identified. Nobody has met Static 88 in person — or if they have, they did not know it.

The scene has theories. Nobody has proof. The voice is the only thing anyone has ever gotten.

THE RULES

These are unwritten. Everyone knows them.

  1. Do not approach Monument Records first. If they want you, they will find you.

  2. The Wound has final say. If the crowd does not move, you are not ready.

  3. 88 Underground is anonymous. Always. Nobody admits to leaking to the station.

  4. Genre does not define you — your scene does. Who you associate with matters more than what you sound like.

  5. Everyone has a day job. Nobody is making enough from music yet. Pretending otherwise is embarrassing.

  6. Going mainstream and coming back is possible. You will never fully belong again. The scene has a long memory.
