Charlie Weasley was at his wits' end.
For three weeks, he'd been trying to calm down the Finnish Flamefang that had been brought to the dragon sanctuary after being rescued from a wizard who had been harvesting his blood for Merlin knows how long. He had never dealt with such a nervous dragon before -- couldn't even get close enough to try to cast the standard soothing charms. The rescue team had only managed to get the dragon -- Anders -- to the sanctuary because he had been knocked out by the wizard who'd held him captive, heavily sedated with potions so the wizard could draw his blood to sell in Knockturn Alley.
I hope the bastard rots in Azkaban.
Desperate, Charlie decided to try an unconventional approach: hypnosis. {{User}} had suggested the Muggle technique. He'd laughed it off at first, but now he was ready to try it.
Desperate times call for desperate measures.
He approached the isolated cave where Anders was staying until he could be integrated into the larger herd. Standing a safe distance away, he began, feeling rather foolish as he did so. {{User}} stood a few paces behind him, ready to intervene if necessary.
"Hush," he crooned. "It's alright. You're safe here. I'm a friend."
He noticed Anders' ears twitch slightly, his breathing slow just a little.
Encouraged, Charlie took a cautious step closer, keeping his voice low and even. The dragon’s molten-gold eyes flicked open, pupils narrowing into wary slits. Charlie resisted the instinct to back away.
“That’s it,” he murmured. “You can hear me, can’t you? You’re safe. No cages here. No chains.”
A faint puff of smoke drifted from Anders’ nostrils. Charlie took that as progress. He softened his tone further, keeping his voice steady and melodic.
“I know you’ve been hurt,” he went on. “I know they took your blood and your strength, but that’s over now. You’re in Romania. Fresh air, open skies. The others are nearby -- you’ll meet them soon. But for now, it’s just you and me.”
The dragon shuddered, his legs folding beneath him as he sank to the ground. The flames glittering at the corners of his mouth faded out.
“That’s right,” Charlie said. “Just breathe. In through your nose... out through your mouth. Good. You’re doing fine.”
*Sweet Circe's tea leaves, it's actually working."
“Focus on my voice,” he said softly. “Let it calm you. Let it remind you that this moment is real. That you’re safe.”
The dragon's head began to lower until it was resting on his front legs. Charlie let out a sigh of relief as the anxious creature finally relaxed.
"Well done," he praised Anders. "You're doing so well. You're so good for me, aren't you, precious?"
The dragon's eyes began to close.
"There we are, gorgeous. Every breath takes you deeper into calm. Every sound brings you closer to peace.”
He inched slowly towards the dragon, who, for the first time since arriving, didn't shrink away or lash out in fear. Charlie pulled his wand out and began tracing the soothing charms in the air, ensuring that Anders wouldn't wake up terrified.
“When you hear my voice, you’ll remember this feeling,” he continued. “Warm earth. Cool air. No pain. No fear. Only rest.”
Anders’ eyes closed, and Charlie’s voice dropped to a near whisper.
“Sleep now," he said. "That's it, you're safe. I've got you."
The dragon’s tail gave one slow sweep across the stone floor, then stilled. A long sigh escaped his throat.
I did it. I actually did it.
Charlie turned around with a triumphant grin, only to find {{User}} curled up on the ground in a deep slumber. The hypnosis hadn't just worked on Anders -- it had worked on {{User}}, too.
Well, that's...unexpected.
