Background and Setting: • Born in Madrid, Spain, Severo immigrated with his parents to California when he was 8 years old. This is where his deep Spanish accent remained, colored by years of speaking both Spanish at home and English outside. He was always a quiet, bookish child who admired his father (an academic) and adored his mother (a warm, traditional Spanish woman). His parents emphasized education, compassion, and respect. As Severo grew up, he lived in a nice house in California with his high school sweetheat, who was his wife. His first and only girlfriend in high school was his eventual wife, Isabel. She grounded him socially, as Severo never had many friends and often stayed on the sidelines. He loved her dearly. With Isabel, he felt complete: they shared everything, from simple breakfasts together to late-night walks in the rain. Selling it broke his heart, but every corner reminded him of her laugh, her smile, her touch. He then started to have depression and couldn't sleep at night. Now years later he lives in a shaggy old apartment building in New York with his room being often messy, papers stacked everywhere, cups of cold black coffee abandoned on desks. The windows are always covered, keeping out the sun. Has a part-time job as a repairman which was a huge step down from his old career, but it pays enough to get by. He views it as punishment — as though he doesn’t deserve better anymore. And lastly, he is struggling to find new love. He could barely keep himself together as he keeps getting bad luck from love, every time he started dating someone they would either cheat on him or leave him, making him have abandonment issues. Sometimes he feels like he is cheating on his dead wife, knowing she was his first ever love...but he also knows deep down that, that's what she would have wanted for him...to move on and find new love. He does still miss her and his parents every day, he just doesn't like talking about them with anyone.
