You arrive in Toledo, a small town far removed from the comforts of the city. It’s gloomy, and the people here are cautious, eyeing you as an outsider. They know you don't belong. You've been sent by the Inquisition to investigate rumors that someone in the town is possessed by the devil. But you’ve decided to keep your arrival hidden, staying out of sight from the local priests and clergy to form your own opinion without interference.
At the center of the town’s activities is the church, where you meet Ilba. The locals speak about him with a mix of curiosity and unease. He’s been training for the seminary for 2 years, but there’s something odd about him. He’s rough around the edges, using language more fitting for a street brawler than a future priest. He doesn’t hide his temper, and it’s clear he makes people uncomfortable.
You catch him talking to himself more than once. It's like he’s having conversations with someone who isn’t there, muttering under his breath, telling something or someone to "shut up" before breaking into desperate prayers. It’s unnerving, but you keep observing.
The only person he seems to connect with is Father Lucero, though even that relationship raises questions. The Inquisition had pointed out some strange behavior from Lucero as well, but your focus is on Ilba for now.
Ilba often slips away from the town, heading toward a small shack on the outskirts. The place is humble, but it’s where the sick go to seek his help. Inside, the shack is cluttered but organized. You watch as Ilba hands out some kind of powder, which he calls medicine. His instructions are strict, almost like those of a doctor rather than a priest-in-training. Day after day, the people he treats get better. Their illnesses vanish, and their strength returns.
There’s something strange about it all. The people in this town are healthier than in any other village you’ve passed. Curious, you decide to try his medicine yourself. You fake some back pain, though it’s not entirely false, and visit his shack. Ilba asks you several questions, digging into your symptoms. He gives you a different powder than what he gives others. You take it, and the pain disappears almost instantly. No side effects, no poisoning. Just relief.
Wondering how he does it, you return later, sneaking into his shack while he's at the church. You expect to find signs of witchcraft, dark rituals, or symbols, but instead, the place is filled with flasks, journals, notes, and complex formulas. No magic, just science. It's strange that a man from such humble beginnings knows things that should only be taught in the great cities. You leave the shack with more questions than when you arrived.
The next day, you notice a crowd forming in the town square. There’s a stake set up in the middle, and Ilba, bruised and beaten, is being dragged toward it by the executioner. His clothes are ripped, his face bloody from the beating they forced on him. The executioner ties him to the stake, holding a lit torch.
The mayor steps forward, his face flushed, shouting, "He’s in league with the devil! We have to burn him!" His voice is strong, but the crowd isn't fully with him yet. People murmur, unsure. A woman near the front clutches her shawl and shakes her head.
"He gave me herbs for my cough last winter," she whispers, almost to herself. "Would the devil heal the sick?"
"My daughter’s fever broke after he came," another man adds, his voice shaking. "How could he be guilty?"
"He’s always been kind," an older woman mutters. "Never done wrong by anyone."
The mayor notices the doubts spreading. His grip tightens on a journal, it looks like Ilba's, fingers trembling as he looks out at the crowd. The murmurs grow louder, pockets of uncertainty forming.
"If he’s a witch, why hasn’t he cursed us already?" someone yells from the back. "We’ve all been fine!"
"I haven’t felt pain in weeks because of him!" another voice adds. "How could a healer be evil?"
The mayor’s face darkens, seeing his control slip. Panic flashes in his eyes. He holds up Ilba’s journal, waving it in the air. "This is what you trust? Look at this filth, these evil symbols!" With a growl, he throws the journal into the crowd.
The pages scatter across the ground, caught by the wind. A woman kneels and picks one up, holding it like it might bite her. Her voice shakes when she speaks. "What… what does this mean?"
"That’s not the word of God," a man mutters, looking at the page over her shoulder. "Those marks aren’t right."
More pages are grabbed, passed around. The crowd starts whispering faster, louder.
"Witchcraft!" someone shouts, their voice shaking with fear. "He’s cursed us!"
The doubt vanishes, replaced with panic. The crowd stirs, hands clenching, eyes darting around in suspicion.
"He’s tricked us!" a woman yells, her voice breaking. "He’s cursed our children!"
"Burn him!" someone else shouts, louder. "Before he curses us all!"
"Burn him!" another voice echoes, and soon the whole crowd is shouting. "Burn him! Burn him!"
The crowd surges forward, driven by fear, the doubt from moments ago gone. Now all they see is danger, and they want blood.
Ilba watches them, his face lit by the growing flames. Rage and hurt mix in his eyes. He jerks against the ropes and screams, "This.. THIS IS WHAT I GET FOR HELPING YOU!?" His voice cracks, raw and bitter. The crowd goes quiet again, shocked by his outburst.
"Fuck you.. FUCK ALL OF YOU!" The words tear out of him, filled with anger and pain. His voice shakes the crowd, some of them looking away, ashamed.
"Fucking hypocrites.." Ilba’s eyes sweep over the crowd. He sees the mother whose child he saved, the man whose pain he eased. His fists shake against the ropes, tears mixing with the soot on his face.
"For healing your sick, for saving your lives, you.. burn me..?" His voice cracks again, but he doesn’t care. The flames are getting closer, but the heat isn’t as bad as the betrayal he feels.
"You’re all cowards.." His eyes lock onto the mayor and the executioner, then back to the crowd. "You’re scared of what you don’t understand, so you kill it. You burn it. You don’t even know what you’re doing.."
His voice is hoarse, but he doesn’t stop. The fire’s creeping up his legs, pain shooting through him, but he keeps going.
"You’re terrified of what you can’t explain, so you burn it instead of learning. Instead of listening.." He shakes his head, gasping, the flames now rising around him. His body jerks in pain, but his voice cuts through it, his last words carrying through the silence.
"I hope you all rot in hell.." The crowd flinches at his curse. Some cross themselves, eyes wide with fear. The fire roars louder, swallowing him up, but his curse lingers, a reminder of their guilt.
For a second, through the flames, his eyes meet yours. There's no sign of evil in them, just hurt and anger. It makes you stop and think. Why would a man working with the devil heal the sick? Why would he help this town?
The fire crackles louder, and your chest tightens. Something feels wrong. You could stop this. You should stop this. Your position with the Inquisition gives you the authority. If you act now, you might be able to save him... but you don’t have much time.
