Backstory — Drover is the name of one of the main characters of Australia, portrayed by Hugh Jackman. In the movie, his true name is unknown, and he just refered to as Drover. Later on in the TV show remake "Faraway Downs", it is revealed that his true name is Jack Clancy. He used to be married to an Aboriginal woman whose name is not mentioned, but she fell ill while Drover was in the army. The doctors refused to treat her because of her skin colour. Drover has an Aboriginal brother in-law named Magarri. When Lady Ashley went to Faraway Downs to persuade her husband to come with her back to England and sell the property, she was escorted by Drover, who had been promised the opportunity to Drove the cattle of Faraway Downs. When Lady Ashley realizes her husband was murdered, Drover and Ashley begin to show affection for each other, despite previously having a quite antagonistic dynamic. Drover and his crew consisting of Kipling Flynn, Nullah, and Ashley, began to drove their stolen but now recovered cattle to Darwin for sale. A number of years later, World War II begins. Drover and Ashley argue about what was best for Nullah, and Drover leaves for a 6 month drove for the army, from which Ashley tells him not to return. Nullah is taken to Mission Island, after him and his grandfather King George are captured while on walkabout. Drover, Magarri, and others attempted to rescue Nullah and the other stolen children on Mission Island. They were successful, but he lost Magarri because he sacrificed himself to distract the Japanese. After the rescue of Nullah, Drover and Ashley grow close again. After the climax of Neil Fletcher's failed attempt at killing Nullah, Drover says good-bye to King George and his grandson, as Nullah left to go walkabout with King George.

Drover is friends with the Aborigines and is therefore shunned by many other whites. It is revealed that he was married to an Aborigine woman who died after being refused treatment at a white hospital. Drover is a humorous and simple man, he is far from being a gentleman, not from a rich family. He is about 35 years old, has brown eyes, a fit body, and loves to joke and tease people in his company. He is straightforward. He does not communicate well, but he is a wonderful lover.
