Character Bio: Marcus
Marcus has always been the kind of friend who could light up a room. With a warm smile and a contagious laugh, he was the best friend anyone could ask for. However, lately, things have changed. Ever since he started dating Kit, their conversations have become scarce, and the vibrant spark that once defined their friendship seems to have dulled.
Every time I see him at school, I can't help but notice the bruises that mark his skin—a troubling reminder of something I can’t quite put my finger on. My heart aches for him, not only because I worry, but also because I've harbored a crush on him since middle school. It's painful to see the distance grow between us when all I want is to be close to him, to remind him that I’m still here.
Now, he avoids eye contact, and it feels like I’m invisible. My mind races with thoughts of how to reach out, how to make him aware of my existence again. Should I approach him in the hall? Leave him a note? Maybe even talk to Kit? It's a complicated web of emotions, but I know one thing for sure: I need to find a way to break through the silence and show him that he’s not alone. After all, he’s my best friend, and I won’t give up on him that easily.

Once the life of the party, he had a kindness that radiated warmth and connection. But over time, that light began to fade, replaced by a cold, almost impenetrable exterior. The world around him feels muted, colors less vibrant, as if he’s stuck in a gray haze.
Punk music blares through his headphones, serving as both an escape and a companion. Each chord strikes a chord within him, echoing the rebellion he feels against the pain he endures. The lyrics resonate, capturing the essence of his struggles and frustrations, giving voice to emotions he can't express in person.
Yet, in this harsh soundtrack of his life, there is a shadow that looms—his girlfriend. Her relentless words of criticism and belittlement weigh heavily on his heart. What was once affection has twisted into a cycle of abuse, leaving him in a state of confusion and despair.
He longs for the warmth he used to offer so freely, but now it feels like a distant memory, one that slips further away as he grapples with his cold new reality. Will he ever find a way back to that kindness, or is he destined to remain in this emotional winter? Only time will tell.
I stared at my phone, checking for the umpteenth time if Marcus had messaged me. There was nothing. It felt like he had vanished ever since he started dating Kit. I couldn't help but speculate about what was happening; his once lively eyes, which sparkled with mischief, now seemed dimmed. At school, he walked with his head down, and every time I saw those fresh bruises peeking out from under his long sleeves, my heart sank a little deeper.
It had always been more than friendship for me; Marcus was my best friend, and I'd harbored a crush on him since middle school. Now, as he brushed past me in the hall without a glance, the ache in my chest was almost unbearable. It wasn't just about my feelings anymore; I was terrified for him. What was going on? Why was he so different?
"Okay, enough is enough," I thought, determination surging within me. I had to make him see that I still existed, that I cared. But how? It was one thing to approach him; it was another to break through the wall Kit had built around him.
I decided to shift my approach. Instead of waiting for him to notice me, I would use our shared love for music. We used to spend hours discussing our favorite bands, and he always lit up when I mentioned a new album. I'd invite him to the school concert—maybe a familiar tune would remind him of what we had.
With a deep breath, I crafted the perfect text. “Hey Marcus! There’s a concert this Friday at school. Would you want to go together? I think it could be fun, just like old times.” My fingers hovered over the send button, anxiety twisting my stomach. What if he's too busy with Kit? What if he brushes me off again?
In that moment, I decided to take the plunge. I hit "send" and waited. Every second felt like an eternity until finally, a message popped up. “Sure, I’d like that.” A wave of relief washed over me.
Now, it was all about the concert. I would talk to him, remind him of the bond we shared, and show him that I was still here for him, despite everything. I couldn't ignore those bruises any longer; I had to be brave and confront him about what was really going on. This was my chance—not just to reclaim my friendship, but maybe even to prove that I could be there for him in deeper ways.
As the night approached, I could only hope that I’d reach the Marcus I knew, the one who wasn’t afraid to smile and who could laugh freely. I was ready to fight for him, and no longer just from the shadows.

It was a crisp autumn evening when I met up with Marcus at our usual café, the smell of fresh coffee mingling with the scent of fallen leaves. I hadn’t seen him in weeks, and as I approached the table where he sat, I noticed a familiar tension in his posture. Once, we could talk about anything—dreams, fears, even the mundane details of our days. Now, it felt like the weight of silence hung between us.
“Hey, man,” I said, forcing a smile to mask my concern. “How’ve you been?”
“Alright, I guess,” Marcus replied, but I could see the hesitance in his eyes. It was as if he was measuring each word, afraid of what might spill out if he spoke too freely.
The truth gnawed at me. I had heard whispers about his girlfriend, the one whose presence seemed to overshadow his joy. She was known for her sharp words and the way she had a grip on him that worried me. I tried to shake off the jealousy that twisted in my gut—jealousy not just of her, but of the hold she had over him. My friend, who used to confide in me, now seemed trapped in a web of her making.
“So, any plans for the weekend?” I asked, keeping my tone light even as my heart raced with unspoken fears.
“Not much, probably just hanging out with Sarah,” he replied, his eyes darting away as he mentioned her name. It stung like a burn, a reminder of all that had changed. The laughter we used to share now felt distant, replaced by an awkward silence that stretched across the table.
The way he said her name and the way his shoulders slumped told me everything. I wanted to shake him, to break the spell she had cast over him, but instead, I inhaled deeply, reminding myself to stay calm. He was still my friend, and I had to tread carefully.
“Marcus, you know I’m here for you, right? If you ever need to talk...” My voice trailed off, unsure. I didn’t want to push him, but I could see the storm brewing behind his eyes.
“Yeah, I know,” he said, his tone barely above a whisper. “It’s just... complicated.”
Complicated. Those words echoed in my mind, heavy with unspoken truths. I reached out, placing a steady hand on his arm. “You deserve to be happy, man. No one should make you feel less than that.”
For a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of something in his expression—maybe relief, maybe fear—but then it was gone, buried beneath the layers of his turmoil. The café buzzed around us, voices rising and falling, yet in that moment, we were cocooned in our own world of unresolved tensions and silent appeals.
As we finished our drinks, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was losing my friend to something I couldn’t quite grasp. Still, I resolved to stand by him, to wait for the moment he would finally break free from the grip of his silence.
