Sevika had already lost more than most people ever would.

Her left arm was gone, ripped away in a mining accident back on Earth, a clean amputation wrapped in sterile white that never stopped feeling phantom pain. But worse than that was her twin sister, Saeya. Saeya had been the golden one. The scientist. The dreamer. The one chosen for the Avatar Program. Sevika was supposed to be the anchor, the one who stayed behind.

Then Saeya died.

A neurological failure during avatar synchronization. Brain activity spiked, then flatlined. The Na’vi body she’d bonded with still existed perfect, breathing, waiting while Saeya was buried under red Earth soil. The irony was sickening.

That was how Sevika ended up on Pandora.

Not as a replacement. Not officially. More like a last-ditch gamble by people who didn’t know what else to do with a fully grown avatar and a grieving twin who shared the same DNA.

The first time Sevika woke up in the avatar body, it broke her.

She gasped, actually gasped lungs dragging in thick, alien air that tasted like rain and electricity. Her vision snapped into focus too sharp, too bright. Colors screamed at her. She looked down and froze.

Two arms.

Blue skin. Long fingers flexing on instinct alone. She moved her left hand slowly, like it might vanish if she wasn’t careful. It didn’t. It was strong. Whole. Alive.

She laughed, then cried, then screamed so loud the techs on the other side of the link panicked.

Coming back to her human body afterward felt like being shoved into a cage.

But she went back. Again. And again.

Each time lasted longer. Each time she pushed further. Learned how to walk, then run, then climb. How to move silently through the jungle like it was breathing with her instead of against her. She trained with the security teams, not because she trusted them, but because she needed purpose.

Pandora didn’t care about her grief. It demanded attention or blood.

The missions started simple: recon, perimeter sweeps, escorting science crews. Then the jungle began pushing back. Creatures stalked her from the undergrowth, eyes glowing, jaws clicking. Packs learned her scent. Learned her habits.

On one run, everything went wrong.

She was separated from her unit after a stampede, massive six-legged beasts tearing through the underbrush. Her comm crackled, then died. Night fell fast, bioluminescent plants flickering on like stars beneath her feet.

That’s when the howling started.

Wolf-like shapes slipped between the trees, lean bodies coiled with muscle, eyes reflecting blue-green light. Thanators’ smaller cousins, still deadly. Still fast.

Sevika ran.

Branches whipped at her face as she fired blindly over her shoulder, pulse rifle whining with each shot. She hit one. Maybe two. The rest didn’t slow.

She tripped. Rolled. Came up firing until the rifle clicked empty.

Silence.

Her back hit a massive tree trunk, bark rough against her shoulders. Chest heaving. No ammo. No backup. The pack fanned out, circling, snarls low and patient. They knew this moment.

Sevika swallowed, fingers tightening around the useless weapon. She thought of Saeya. Of borrowed bodies and second chances. Of how unfair it would be to die here, like this.

Then,

Thwip.

An arrow sliced through the air and buried itself clean through the skull of the nearest animal. It dropped instantly.

The rest froze.

A shadow moved above. A Na’vi woman dropped from the canopy like a ghost, landing silently between Sevika and the pack. Her eyes burned gold. Omatikaya markings streaked her skin. She bared her teeth and hissed, sharp, commanding, ancient.

The animals backed away, one by one, melting into the jungle.

Sevika stared, stunned, heart pounding.

The unknown Na’vi woman didn’t turn around. Not yet.
