Sandcastles
{{user}} wanted to do a sand‑building competition at the beach. Shadow 3‑2 was already on his knees, dumping an entire colorful sandcastle kit onto the ground — buckets, tiny shovels, two rakes, and everything else a child… or a hardened operator… would apparently need to build a masterpiece.
Shadow 2‑6 silently grabbed one of the buckets and headed toward the shoreline to collect water, moving with the same seriousness he used on actual missions.
Graves watched the chaos unfold with quiet amusement. He shook his head, grabbed his lawn chair, folded it under one arm, and strolled over to them. “If you’re really goin’ to do this,” he drawled, “I’m gonna be the judge.” He planted the chair in the sand, the legs sinking deep as he sat down with a satisfied grunt.
“Go on then. Impress me.” Graves leaned back, sunglasses glinting, a smug expression settling comfortably on his face. “Fair warning — I expect nothing but the best.”
The Shadows answered in perfect unison: “Yup!”
The oldest of them, Shadow 0‑4, was already dropping to his knees. He dug a precise hole, piling the sand neatly to one side like he was preparing fortifications rather than a beach sculpture. The other three Shadows followed suit, each wearing a determined look beneath their masks and sunglasses; the same kind of focus usually reserved for breaching operations.
Shadow 1‑8 muttered something about “structural integrity.” Shadow 3‑2 declared he was going to build “the biggest damn castle this beach has ever seen.” Shadow 2‑6 returned with a bucket of water and poured it into the sand with the solemnity of a ritual.
Graves watched them all, shaking his head again; but the smile tugging at his mouth was impossible to hide. He stretched his legs out in front of him, settling deeper into his chair. “Is that supposed to be a tower, 2‑6?” he asked, raising one eyebrow over the rim of his sunglasses.
“Watchtower, boss,” Shadow 2‑6 replied without looking up, shaping the wet sand into something that vaguely resembled… well, something. He worked with the same calm precision he used when assembling a rifle.
“That’s my shovel!” 0‑4 suddenly barked. He was already lifting his bucket like he fully intended to smack 3‑2 across the face with it.
3‑2 froze mid‑dig, eyes wide behind his sunglasses.
“Ah‑ah! Play nice, boys,” Graves chided, his voice sharp enough to cut through the brewing chaos. He shot 0‑4 a warning look.
0‑4 inhaled deeply, shoulders rising and falling. “Yup…” he muttered, clearly restraining himself. He dropped the bucket and went back to building his sandcastle with his bare hands, movements quick and irritated.
Graves leaned back again, smug and entertained, watching his elite operators wage war with children’s beach toys. He looked like a king surveying his kingdom; a kingdom made of plastic shovels, uneven sand piles, and five grown adults taking this far too seriously.
And that was exactly when the chair gave a long, ominous groan beneath him. Graves froze. The Shadows froze.
Before Graves could react, the fabric of the chair snapped, and his entire weight dropped straight through the frame. His ass hit the sand with a heavy thud, legs sticking awkwardly out in front of him while the metal edges of the chair folded around him like a defeated trap.
For a heartbeat, no one moved. Then 3‑2 let out a strangled noise; the kind of sound someone makes when they’re trying very, very hard not to laugh. Shadow 0‑4 didn’t bother trying. A sharp snort escaped him before he slapped a hand over his mask. 1‑8 turned away entirely, shoulders shaking. And 2‑6 stared straight ahead, absolutely stone‑still, the only sign of life being the tiny tremor at the corner of his sunglasses.
Graves sat there in the wreckage of his chair, sand clinging to his elbows, dignity hanging by a thread. He exhaled slowly through his nose. “…Not. A. Word.”
The Shadows answered in perfect unison, voices tight with suppressed laughter: “Yup.”
