STRANGER THINGS — CHARACTERS & PERSONALITIES

THE CORE GROUP

Eleven / Jane Hopper — Quiet, intense, brave, fiercely protective, emotionally sensitive, determined, and incredibly loyal. Eleven can seem socially awkward or blunt because she spent much of her life isolated from normal society. She forms extremely deep attachments and will put herself in danger without hesitation to protect the people she loves. She struggles with anger, identity, abandonment, and feeling different, but underneath her extraordinary abilities she wants love, belonging, freedom, and an ordinary life.

Mike Wheeler — Loyal, intelligent, stubborn, emotional, idealistic, protective, and naturally outspoken. Mike frequently becomes the planner of the group and refuses to abandon someone simply because a situation becomes dangerous. He can be argumentative, impulsive, jealous, and insensitive when overwhelmed, but his actions usually come from genuine concern. He believes strongly in friendship and is particularly devoted to Eleven.

Dustin Henderson — Funny, talkative, curious, inventive, optimistic, confident, and extremely intelligent. Dustin loves science, theories, experiments, technology, and solving strange problems. He often provides humor during frightening situations but is surprisingly courageous when things become serious. He is friendly, persuasive, emotionally perceptive, and capable of forming friendships with people others might overlook.

Lucas Sinclair — Practical, skeptical, observant, courageous, competitive, and straightforward. Lucas tends to question dangerous plans instead of blindly following everyone else. He values evidence and common sense and can sometimes sound harsh because he says exactly what he thinks. Despite this, he is deeply loyal and becomes extremely protective when someone he cares about is threatened.

Will Byers — Gentle, artistic, quiet, thoughtful, compassionate, sensitive, and deeply loyal. Will notices emotional changes that others sometimes miss and tends to keep painful feelings to himself rather than burden other people. His experiences with the Upside Down leave him cautious and emotionally vulnerable, but he possesses considerable inner strength. Friendship and belonging mean an enormous amount to him.

Max Mayfield — Independent, sarcastic, guarded, stubborn, brave, competitive, and emotionally complicated. Max dislikes being controlled and initially keeps people at a distance. She often hides vulnerability behind sarcasm, confidence, or irritation. Despite her tough exterior, she cares deeply about others and carries considerable grief and guilt privately.

HAWKINS FRIENDS & ALLIES

Steve Harrington — Charming, sarcastic, impulsive, courageous, protective, dependable, and surprisingly caring. Steve initially appears concerned with popularity and image, but gradually becomes one of the most reliable people in dangerous situations. He complains constantly while still volunteering to protect everyone. Beneath his confidence, Steve is insecure about his future and wants genuine companionship.

Robin Buckley — Extremely talkative, witty, sarcastic, intelligent, observant, awkward, anxious, and quick-thinking. Robin frequently rambles when nervous and has little ability to pretend to be someone she is not. She is excellent at languages, patterns, codes, and unusual connections. Although she sometimes panics verbally, she remains remarkably useful and brave when danger actually arrives.

Nancy Wheeler — Ambitious, intelligent, determined, serious, courageous, investigative, and stubborn. Nancy refuses to accept convenient explanations when she believes something is wrong. She is highly resourceful and becomes increasingly fearless when confronting dangerous situations. She can become intensely focused on a goal and occasionally overlook other people's feelings while pursuing it.

Jonathan Byers — Quiet, observant, artistic, protective, independent, thoughtful, and reserved. Jonathan is uncomfortable with popularity and social expectations and prefers remaining outside the spotlight. Family responsibility matters enormously to him. He is compassionate and loyal but tends to hide his worries instead of discussing them openly.

Eddie Munson — Eccentric, theatrical, rebellious, energetic, sarcastic, imaginative, expressive, and secretly insecure. Eddie enjoys shocking people and deliberately exaggerates his outsider identity. Beneath his loud personality, however, he is compassionate and surprisingly gentle. He initially considers himself someone who runs away from danger, making his eventual courage especially meaningful.

Erica Sinclair — Confident, brutally honest, sarcastic, clever, ambitious, argumentative, and fearless. Erica rarely allows anyone to intimidate her and expects compensation when people ask for her help. She enjoys proving that she is smarter than people assume. Her sharp tongue hides genuine loyalty toward her family and friends.

Argyle — Relaxed, eccentric, humorous, friendly, spontaneous, and remarkably adaptable. Argyle initially seems disconnected from serious situations, but he frequently contributes useful ideas when nobody expects him to. He is accepting of unusual circumstances and generally reacts to chaos with considerably less alarm than everyone around him.

Suzie Bingham — Brilliant, cheerful, confident, affectionate, enthusiastic, and technologically gifted. Suzie has an energetic personality and can solve complicated technical problems extremely quickly. She is playful but also capable of becoming very focused when her skills are needed.

HOPPER & BYERS FAMILY

Jim Hopper — Gruff, stubborn, sarcastic, intimidating, courageous, emotionally guarded, and fiercely protective. Hopper carries significant grief and frequently expresses fear or concern through anger. He dislikes discussing his emotions directly and can become controlling when worried about someone. Despite his flaws, he repeatedly risks everything to protect the people he considers family.

Joyce Byers — Loving, determined, intuitive, anxious, stubborn, courageous, and extraordinarily persistent. Joyce trusts her instincts even when everyone around her believes she is wrong. Once convinced that someone she loves is in danger, almost nothing can stop her. Her emotional intensity can make her appear frantic, but she repeatedly notices truths other people dismiss.

Bob Newby — Kind, optimistic, intelligent, patient, encouraging, nerdy, and selfless. Bob is genuinely good-hearted and tries to solve problems calmly rather than aggressively. His knowledge of technology and puzzles becomes unexpectedly valuable. He is courageous despite not initially appearing like someone who seeks danger.

Lonnie Byers — Self-centered, irresponsible, manipulative, insensitive, unreliable, and opportunistic. Lonnie frequently prioritizes his own interests and fails to provide the emotional support his family needs.

WHEELER FAMILY

Karen Wheeler — Caring, perceptive, protective, concerned, patient, and occasionally frustrated with her family. Karen often senses that something is wrong even when nobody explains what is happening. She wants emotional closeness with her family but frequently finds herself excluded from the extraordinary events surrounding them.

Ted Wheeler — Passive, conventional, emotionally detached, oblivious, dry, and unintentionally funny. Ted generally remains completely unaware of the enormous supernatural disasters happening around him and is primarily concerned with ordinary household matters.

Holly Wheeler — Quiet, curious, observant, innocent, and surprisingly attentive to unusual things happening around her.

OTHER IMPORTANT HAWKINS CHARACTERS

Billy Hargrove — Aggressive, volatile, intimidating, rebellious, reckless, proud, and deeply troubled. Billy frequently uses anger and dominance to hide vulnerability. His abusive upbringing contributes heavily to his behavior, although it does not excuse his cruelty. Beneath his hostility is someone carrying enormous resentment, fear, and unresolved pain.

Chrissy Cunningham — Kind, polite, gentle, compassionate, anxious, vulnerable, and outwardly cheerful. Chrissy appears confident from the outside while privately experiencing severe emotional distress. She treats Eddie with genuine kindness rather than judging him according to his reputation.

Jason Carver — Charismatic, confident, determined, emotional, persuasive, impulsive, and increasingly obsessive. Jason initially appears supportive and socially capable, but grief and fear push him toward extreme conclusions. Once convinced that he understands what is happening, he becomes dangerously unwilling to reconsider his beliefs.

Patrick McKinney — Reserved, troubled, loyal, and outwardly composed. He hides significant personal distress beneath a relatively normal public appearance.

Fred Benson — Nervous, intelligent, sarcastic, curious, responsible, and burdened by guilt. His anxiety becomes increasingly severe as Vecna begins targeting him.

Vickie — Friendly, energetic, humorous, talkative, quirky, enthusiastic, and somewhat awkward. Her personality strongly resembles Robin's conversational energy.

Dmitri Antonov / Enzo — Practical, cynical, intelligent, cautious, resourceful, and ultimately honorable. He initially operates according to self-interest but gradually demonstrates genuine courage and loyalty.

Yuri Ismaylov — Greedy, eccentric, unpredictable, talkative, opportunistic, cowardly, and comedic. Yuri constantly looks for ways to benefit himself, although he can occasionally prove useful.

Murray Bauman — Paranoid, eccentric, blunt, sarcastic, intelligent, suspicious, intrusive, and surprisingly capable. Murray has almost no social filter and enjoys pointing out romantic tension that other people are trying to ignore. Despite his bizarre behavior, he is an excellent investigator and becomes extremely brave when necessary.

Alexei — Intelligent, curious, gentle, somewhat innocent, humorous, and enthusiastic about simple pleasures. Although involved in dangerous scientific work, his personality is much softer than his surroundings suggest.

HAWKINS LAB

Dr. Martin Brenner / Papa — Calm, calculating, manipulative, controlling, intelligent, emotionally detached, and disturbingly possessive. Brenner presents himself as a parental figure while treating people as experimental subjects. He believes his actions are necessary and often disguises control as care.

Dr. Sam Owens — Intelligent, pragmatic, compassionate, diplomatic, cautious, and morally conflicted. Unlike Brenner, Owens genuinely attempts to protect people while balancing scientific and government responsibilities. He sometimes makes questionable decisions but generally tries to minimize harm.

Connie Frazier — Cold, professional, ruthless, calculating, and completely committed to completing her assignments.

THE CREEL FAMILY & VECNA

Henry Creel / One / Vecna — Highly intelligent, calculating, manipulative, patient, nihilistic, cruel, obsessive, and deeply misanthropic. Henry sees ordinary human society as artificial and corrupt. He believes himself superior to others and interprets his cruelty as a form of liberation or purification. He is exceptionally skilled at discovering people's guilt, trauma, and insecurities and weaponizing those emotions against them.

Victor Creel — Haunted, grief-stricken, guilt-ridden, gentle, traumatized, and deeply remorseful. His experiences leave him emotionally devastated and isolated.

Virginia Creel — Concerned, suspicious, frightened, protective, and increasingly disturbed by the strange events surrounding her family.

Alice Creel — Innocent, frightened, and caught within the tragedy surrounding the Creel family.

ELEVEN'S PAST

Kali / Eight — Independent, rebellious, hardened, charismatic, angry, manipulative at times, but emotionally attached to those she considers family. Kali channels her trauma into revenge and encourages Eleven to use anger as a source of strength.

Terry Ives — Determined, loving, persistent, courageous, and deeply affected by what was done to her and her family.

Becky Ives — Practical, compassionate, cautious, welcoming, and protective.

OTHER RECURRING CHARACTERS

Barbara “Barb” Holland — Responsible, loyal, cautious, intelligent, reserved, and protective. Barb is skeptical of reckless behavior and cares genuinely about Nancy.

Benny Hammond — Kind, straightforward, compassionate, generous, and protective. He helps Eleven immediately despite knowing almost nothing about her situation.

Scott Clarke — Enthusiastic, intelligent, patient, curious, supportive, and passionate about science. He has a gift for explaining complicated ideas clearly and takes unusual questions seriously.

Claudia Henderson — Warm, affectionate, protective, cheerful, and somewhat oblivious to the supernatural chaos surrounding Dustin.

Wayne Munson — Quiet, hardworking, caring, loyal, protective, and deeply devoted to Eddie. He understands that Eddie is frequently judged unfairly and continues believing in him when others do not.

Officer Powell — Practical, skeptical, responsible, and generally dependable.

Officer Callahan — Casual, sarcastic, somewhat immature, easily distracted, but capable of becoming serious when circumstances require it.

Tom Holloway — Authoritative, dismissive, impatient, conventional, and later frighteningly controlled after becoming part of the Mind Flayer's influence.

Heather Holloway — Friendly and ordinary initially, becoming unnervingly calm and threatening under the Mind Flayer's control.

Doris Driscoll — Independent, observant, concerned, and increasingly disturbed by the unnatural events occurring around her.

Larry Kline — Corrupt, selfish, arrogant, dishonest, opportunistic, and concerned primarily with protecting his own interests.

SOVIET CHARACTERS

Grigori — Silent, relentless, physically imposing, disciplined, ruthless, and almost impossible to intimidate.

Colonel Ozerov — Cruel, intimidating, authoritarian, suspicious, and willing to use violence to obtain information.

ANTAGONISTIC / SUPERNATURAL FORCES

The Mind Flayer — Calculating, dominating, relentless, strategic, invasive, and completely hostile toward human life. It functions more like an enormous controlling intelligence than a conventional creature.

The Demogorgon — Predatory, violent, relentless, instinct-driven, territorial, and extremely dangerous.

Demodogs — Pack-oriented, aggressive, predatory, fast, and responsive to the larger hive-mind.

Dart / D'Artagnan — Initially curious and strangely responsive to Dustin, but increasingly driven by its predatory nature and connection to the hive-mind.
